Kelis's debut album was a phenomenal success, but the muted interest in the follow-up has been followed by low expectations for her third album, Tasty. "Caught Out There", from Kaleidoscope, had her storming the airwaves with a chant of "I hate you so much right now!" and she returns with "Milkshake", a schoolyard taunt for grown-up girls. The minimalist Neptunes production was an obvious first single but the CD hardly stops there. From collaborations with Andre 3000 ("Millionaire", a showcase for the OutKast frontman's falsetto) and Nas (the randy "In Public") and a rap-rock exercise ("Keep It Down") to irresistible updates of early 1980s R&B ("Protect My Heart", "Glow"), the disc offers plenty in the way of potential follow-ups. While less playful than some of her past work, Tasty brings a raised eyebrow and good humour to the 21st century sex-u-up template. --Rickey Wright


CD Description

'Tasty' is the third album from Kelis and after the abstract funk rock of her second release 'Wanderland' returns to the R&B sound that propelled her into the media spotlight. Produced by the Neptunes, P. Diddy and Timbaland to name a few the album is a mix of futuristic R&B, hip hop and soul. 'Tasty' features guest appearances from the likes of Nas, Outkast's Andre 3000 and Raphael Saadig.

There's something about this album that surprises me everytime i listen to it: though its production comes close to minimalism, its richness is impressive.Your attention is grabbed from beginning to end: let's take "in public": the beat is simple and there are few other noises here and there.However this song is,like the rest of the album, lush and...man,so damn good! Kelis and her producers discovered the secret formula of making a lot with a little.Of course that doesn't exclude the fact that they worked a lot to make this lp.You feel that this is a refined album, that they poured their knowledge and genuine talent into this damn cool record.
"Trick me" and "keep it down" are 2 attempts at rock r'n'b style,done with style."Milkshake" is a lot of fun."In public" with its sexy undertone is my personal favourite."Flashback" comes from "wanderland" her previous release,and is not great,not bad.There was no need to include it."Protect my heart" is a gorgeous,unpretentious little song."Glow" shines in all its glory,with its laid-back beat and more than fine little melody.My 2nd favourite."Millionaire" is fast and features a good vocal performance.Sugar honey iced tea is sooooo fresh and simple,with a discreet horn part.rolling through the hood is...simple.It's just kelis and a fine beat,nothing more.stick up is minimalist and has a strange feel to it.Who said that was a bad thing? Marathon is the same,with a nice string part and its ending is quite good.Oops! i forgot "attention"!Don't think it's because i don't like it! This song is like a cool breeze:cool music,great voice and fine lyrics.
That's about it! You,the r'n'b fan,yes you! You shall buy tasty for it contributes to the reviving of real r'n'b!I'm tellin' ya!
ps: to me real r'n'b is innovative and just plain fun!that's what it's about.

I was unsure about the album before buying it, the music usually isn't my cup of tea but after hearing the fantastic 'Milkshake' and catchy 'Trick Me' I thought it was worth a go. I was pleasently surprised, the funky beats and catchy tunes continue throughout the album. Not only do you have the genius of Kelis but the collaborations with Andrea 3000 and Nas are equally enjoyable. The album was more mainstream than I expected and one that will be in my CD player for a while yet!

Yes she is. Perched on top of a sundae on the album cover, she looks like the ripest cherry. On a musical front the husky toned frizzy fox has come back with a varied and at times downright seductive album. Drawing on the creative well of not only the Neptunes (there are other good producers in the world!), but also Outkast's Andre 3000 and Raphael Saadiq in particular, the album reassuringly offers a scattering of catchy singles and booty shaking beats. Indeed it caters for all tastes and tempos. The naughtiness factor is there throughout, moving from the skank of 'Trick Me' via alfresco sexual throwdown to latest squeeze rapper Nas ('In Public') through to swooning serenade ('Glow'). For all its novelty value and dark sexy drums, 'Milkshake' is the nerve pusher in the pack, the 'Caught Out There' of the album if you like.

Fittingly, the album closes on a deep overwhelming plea in 'Marathon', which brings her voice to the fore. Kelis thusfar has been hit and miss but there's something unique about her, part bubblegum girl next door, part class act. As she mutters at the close: "Swallow".
