The best-known of Johann Sebastian Bach's works for clavier, The
Well-Tempered Clavier is an endlessly inventive collection of 48 preludes
and fugues, often considered one of the sublime monuments of Western music.
This release of the first 24 covers two CDs.

About the Artist
Born 1972 in Vienna, Fellner gained international recognition by winning first prize at the Clara Haskil International Competition in 1993. He is a protégé of Alfred Brendel with whom he shares some musical-temperamental affinities.

The Austrian pianist has been praised by the press for his "insistence on putting musical sense and sensibility ahead of idle showmanship": this is the constant factor in all of his work, whether playing classical or contemporary pieces - he gets at the heart of the material. Highly concentrated, very self-possessed, he radiates an aura of calmness and dedication.

Alfred Brendel has famously stated that his protege Fellner plays Bach in a different and perhaps better way than he himself does. Since Brendel has committed so little Bach to disc, one therefore awaits Fellner's debut recording for ECM with considerable interest. What is astonishing about Fellner's playing is his marvellous touch and control, and the colour that he brings to Bach's famous preludes and fugues. Another interesting feature of the disc is that he sometimes ignores the prevalent view among modern Bach players that the pieces should be played without pedal if played on the modern concert grand. The result is often striking: with Fellner's light touch, general fast speeds, tidy articulation and intelligent use of the pedal in some, but by no means all of the pieces, the sound is seldom soggy but rather utterly beautiful. Take the E-minor prelude: seldom can the violin- or oboe-like melody in the right have emerged from the accompaniment in the left with such aching and poignant beauty. But if there is a down side to Fellner's playing it is precisely also this: that it is perhaps too refined, too beautiful. Fellner never really seems to let go. This recording misses some of the elan that players like Hewitt brings to the pieces, or some of the clarity and intensity that of Koroliov (my current favourite). Fellner often tends to emphasise the top line as a meldoic line, and this, combined with a slightly muddy acoustic, tends to obscure Bach's inventive polyphony (example: fugue in F-sharp). But still, a recording which offers many rewards. I look forward to more in future.
