Amazon.co.uk Review

World Service suggests once again that Delirious's studio releases are getting to be like Star Trek movies: every other release is the good one. While Mezzamorphis and Touch had their bright moments, it was the subsequent releases of Glo and World Service that truly testify to the musical and songwriting brilliance of these faith-based Brit rockers. Lead man Martin Smith, well known within Christian music circles for his songwriting prowess (on songs such as "I Can Sing of Your Love Forever"), combines with guitarist Stu Garrard for 12 tracks filled with melody, catchy hooks, and enough crunch to satisfy anyone's cutting-edge tastes. The irresistible chorus lines in "Rain Down", "Majesty", and "Everyone Knows" show that the Smith-Garrard tandem knows a good pop song. But the more subtle and substantial element in World Service is the clear comfort the band has with each other. Drummer Stew Smith and bassist Jon Thatcher lay down rock-steady rhythms throughout while keyboardist Tim Jupp adds just enough spice to make it interesting. "Inside Outside" is a great example of this with plenty of space between each musician's moments. Delirious is clearly more confident and mature in their craft. Music fans in the Christian world and beyond will be all the better for it. --Michael Lyttle, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars The stunning new d: album, 3 Dec 2003
This review is from: World Service (Audio CD)
'World Service' is the sixth studio album from Delirious? and from it's title alone the band set out their intention of wanting to serve the world with their music. The album was recorded during periods of both sorrow and happiness and is the culmination of nearly a year's hard work. From rocking anthems like ‘God In Heaven’ and ‘Feel It Comin on’, to the stunning ballads of ‘Every Little Thing’ and ‘Mountains High’ the album showcases Delirious? at their absolute best. ‘Inside Outside’ is one of the best songs the band have ever recorded, featuring Stu and Martin sharing the vocals. ‘With You’ has a Radiohead feel to it, and the moody ‘Free’ contains a fine blend of high and low pitched guitars and an orchestral sound. Very few weak songs and indeed many have the potential to become all time favourites. The often complex layers of sounds require multiple listens to fully appreciate their ingenuity. The album demonstrates newly developed directions for the band, as well as exploring the styles they have become famous for. A stunning album which charts the highs and lows of a band on a journey

5.0 out of 5 stars The best yet from Delirious?, 5 Dec 2003
This review is from: World Service (Audio CD)
After 2001's much debated Audio Lesonover, Delirious set out to make an album with no agenda but their own - and in my opinion this has helped the boys to come home and make their best album yet, certaintly there best collection of all new songs since 99's Mezzamorphis. IT's difficult to pin down a style, even the first track GRace Like A River switches between the heavy rock intro and verse, and the soaring beautiful chorus, with the rest of the album full of similar contrast. The songs have been written from personal emotional experience, with a big theme of grace and also God's glory, majesty and sovereignty. SInging about such themes from a personal viewpoint makes the songs all the more powerful, the lyrics all the more touching and the vocals are beautifully delivered, intimate and full of emotion, belted out with huge power when appropriate! The thing that really makes this album stand out from the rest of DElirious work is how it isn't scrictly a Worship ALbum or Secular album, but it is the songs they wanted to write about whatever was on their heart at the time. Couple this with some cracking tunes, stunning musicianship from all members of the band and polished production (without being over produced) and it is not an oversatement to say this is one of the best albums anyone will release all year. Stand out tracks are Inside Outside, with its amazing lyrics and musical simplicity, With You, one of the sweetest and most beautiful tunes and best delivered vocals Ive heard in a long time,Mountains High for its raw expression of emotion and the power of Feel IT Comin ON.

5.0 out of 5 stars World Service, 16 Jan 2006
This review is from: World Service (Audio CD)
I bought this album after going to see Delirious in concert. They were brilliant, and this album is equally good. Some songs are very moving, some just make you want to dance! Maybe the best Christian band ever!
