DVD Description
When prospective fathers-in-law Steve Tobias (Michael Douglas) and Jerry Peyser (Albert Brooks) meet for the first time to celebrate their children’s upcoming marriage, the cake hits the fan. Peyser is a mild-mannered podiatrist with a well-organised daily routine designed to eliminate all possible sources of stress. Meanwhile, daredevil CIA operative Tobias moves through life life a heat-seeking missile. His average day consists of dodging bullets, stealing private jets and negotiating with international arms smugglers. When these two guys get together, the laughs and the thrills come thick and fast.

4.0 out of 5 stars The In Laws, 27 April 2004
By D. Rook "Dave Rook" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Two men with very different views have one thing in common. Their childrenare getting married to each others! One is a foot specialist (AlbertBrooks) and the other is apparently in the CIA (Michael Douglas). The filmhas a similar feel to "Analyse This" (with the two very oppositecharacters constantly meeting head on!). The film has a good love story, aslight spoof feel (especially with it's James Bond references), action, comedy and is great for a family, yet it never becomes tacky. The humourusually comes from situations which are just funny situations, none ofthis cruddy slapstick. The romance doesn't require you to reach for thebucket which is great! The action isn't just "for the lads" and it's agreat film to watch amongst friends or partners as well as the family. It's a feel good film. Very funny, well acted, well thought out andthroughably enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps you on your toes, 20 Jul 2005

Well, the kids are getting married. As usual the in-laws-to-be come from different environments. How different you may ask? Well you will just have to watch and find out. The father of the bride Jerry Peyser (Albert Brooks) is a highly specialized doctor. His skills and training will come to play a crucial part in this story. The father of the groom Steve Tobias (Michael Douglas) is a fast paced, never home Xerox salesman. Jerry will soon find out how hectic the life of a Xerox salesman can be.

2.0 out of 5 stars Firing Blanks, 14 May 2006
I do not mean to sound cynical, but this film is meer Hollywood schmaltz, with a rather weak plot and...well, near enough everything else.
Douglas has done sexy and hip (Basic Instinct) as well as his great performance in 'Traffic', in 2000. But the issue with The In-Laws is that he desparately tries to appear cool as a cucumber in a film that has no style whatsoever. The plot is tedious and deviates from the usual yarn-a wacky parent threatens his son's wedding by up-setting the bride's conservative parents by his unconventional job of being a member of the CIA.
It's so ambitious that it wants to cash in on the same idea that 'Meet The Parents', staring Robert DeNiro sucessfully did, but alas, we have a poor man's film instead.
A bargain basement comedy and in terms of action, well, it fires blanks. Douglas may once have been an edgy Hollywood actor, infamous for his steamy on screen lust with Sharon Stone in the 1990's, but this film is infamous in the opposite sence: dire, and uninteresting.
It offers nothing new or refreshing and its failure at the box-office is entirely justified.
