4.0 out of 5 stars A fine Jamaican folk music compilation, 12 May 2004
By Mailian (Brussels, Belgium) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
V2 and compiler Steve Barrow finally give us a selection of some of the best mento song recorded in 1951-56 for Stanley Motta's MRS label. Digitally remastered this Jamaican folk music, related to but different from the Trinidadian calypso, gets its due recognition with this 18 tracks sampler.
Lord Fly brings us 5 tracks with Big big sambo gal/Mattie rag as his musically best and A medley of Jamaican mento as his lyrical best. Boysie Grant (3 tracks) shines on the socially aware Monkey talk. Hubert Porter, Harold Richardson (Glamour girl from 1951, one of the first recorded music in Jamaica) and Monty Reynolds chip in with each 2 tracks. Opening track Hill & gully ride/Mandeville by Lord Composer is representative for several tracks that resurfaced in the ska and reggae recordings. Most of the featured tracks are mentioned in the Mento chapter of the Rough Guide Reggae, written by Steve Barrow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jamaica skips into the studio, 17 Jan 2008
By John Tree "Finding the good stuff" (Poulton-le-Fylde, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Mento is probably the first style of Jamaican music that was recorded in any volume. Similar to Calypso, but intrinsically Jamaican, with it's story based lyrics and inmistakeably danceable beats. There are quite a number of recordings around...although the strength of much of the back-catalogue stuff is very variable, both in performance and sound quality.
What we have here is a great collection of acoustic songs, really uplifting,...some great musicianship too...and the quality of the recordings on these remastered tunes is on the whole good considering the era and location. I personally find this collection amongst the best available in this often overlooked genre. A satisfying collection from a more innocent age...one for those balmy summer nights... get your friends round, fire up the barbie, crack open the rum, turn up the volume, and get moving those hips!
