5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant stuff, 19 Nov 2003
Finally, after swathes of cookie-cutter wannabe popstars created by 'reality tv', fame academy came across a genuine, gorgeous and astoundingly talented artist in the form of Alex Parks. I was eally impressed by every song she did on the series, putting her own distinctive stamp on them.
'Maybe that's what it takes' is a beautiful song, and her haunting and emotional vocal style reminds me of the also brilliant Annie Lennox. If there's any justice it'll knock the 'pop-by-numbers, flavour-of-the-week' act off the top spot.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great debut, 4 Nov 2003
The first single from Fame Academy 2003 winner Alex Parks, 'Maybe That's What it Takes' is a haunting piano ballad about the sacrifices of love.
A brilliant song in the vain of artists like Sarah Mclachlan, it rises and falls, dragging the listener out with it like the tide.
I cannot recommend the song enough.
Also on the single a cover of 'Beautiful' sung with more emotion than would be thought possible and 'Over Conscious' another original song.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for hard core fans, 29 Nov 2003
By deepbluesky (London, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This debut single contains three tracks from Alex Parks' excellent album 'Introduction' so while it's a must-have for hard core fans, others may prefer to buy the album.

Maybe That's What It Takes: Not one of Alex's strongest, lyrically speaking, but this track is gorgeous. I love it, simply for Alex's magnificent vocals. Her voice connects directly to the pleasure centre in my brain.

Beautiful: Lovely. True to the ravishing showdown performances that topped and tailed Alex's exciting ride through Fame Academy. I really like the 70s-style backing vocals.

Over Conscious: Tortured, clever, camp, maybe even a little psychedelic. Heavily programmed instrumentals which worm their way into your subconscious. An extraordinary, imaginative piece of work.
