Before buying this set of CDs I was scarcely aware of Maconchy's work, though the name was vaguely familiar. If you love the quartets of Bartok and Shostakovich you should enjoy these. The performances (by three different quartets) seem uniformly excellent and the recording quality is unobrtrusively satisfying, without that unpleasant edge which sometimes afflicts quartet recordings. At the price you should buy this one!
