Product Description

Manufacturer's Description
With an all-new original Signal Processing Engine that excels at high-speed processing the G 400 starts up in a mere 0.7 seconds, then it takes only 0.2 seconds more for auto-focus and auto-exposure measurement - you can turn it on and have the first shot taken in just 0.9 seconds. What's more, once the AF/AE measurements are complete, shutter release time lag is a virtually imperceptible 0.03 seconds. Another boost to overall speed is a lens retraction time of just 0.6 seconds. The entire process - turn on, shoot, and turn off - can be accomplished in snappy 1.5 seconds. When your chance to take that great shot arises, you won't miss it with this kind of performance.

An innovative Rapid AF system that combines external passive AF with CCD video AF technology achieves precise focus metering within approximately 0.2 seconds. Focus is fast and accurate even under varying shooting conditions thanks to an advanced original hybrid AF algorithm. Further, when shooting in auto mode or the Angel, Snap, or Sports program mode there's no need to half-press the shutter button to focus: simply press the shutter button and allow the external AF will take over and do the focusing for you. All of these advances mean you can focus faster, and capture moving subjects with greater reliability and precision.

Fast-moving subjects won't escape this camera's Super Continuous Mode. The shot interval is set quickly, and you can automatically shoot up to 3 frames in succession at a rate of 2.5 frames per second while holding the shutter button.

Even after you've taken a large number of pictures you can recall and view them quickly and easily. The last frame can be displayed in just 0.2 seconds. Review your shots anywhere, any time with maximum convenience.

High-speed recharging lets you take one flash shot after another with a recharge time of only about 4 seconds.

Original high-density technology and a dramatic reduction in lens unit size has made it possible to offer a 3x optical zoom lens in an innovative 23-millimeter (0.9-inches) thin body design. In addition to compact go-anywhere dimensions the camera weighs only 145 grams (5.1 ounces). It slips in your pocket with ease, ready to shoot whenever you are.

With its graceful combination of stainless steel and aluminum, this camera has looks that match its fine performance. Emphasizing the high-quality feel of these metals, the G 400 is a pleasure to own and use.

The camera's beautiful "face" is its sliding lens cover that also functions as the main power switch. It protects the lens when the camera is not in use, and at startup a blue LED indicates that it is ready to shoot.

This high resolution combined with original Hybrid Adaptive A IPS technology means faithful reproduction of every detail of every scene. Color reproduction and gradation are true to life, too, thanks to the implementation of a special primary color filter.

The GT HEXANON 3x optical zoom lens features special treatment to suppress flare and edge distortion so that it delivers extraordinarily high image resolution. Although it has 7 elements in 6 groups, including aspherical elements, this lens contributes to the camera's slim profile by being the smallest-diameter lens in the world with this level of performance. And with its high-speed, low-noise zoom drive you can frame and shoot so fast you won't miss a great shot.

Extraordinarily natural, faithful images are achieved through an original algorithm that calculates the ideal exposure, focus, and white balance values in an instant based on the corresponding exposure, focus, and color data received from the camera's CCD.

A top-quality GT HEXANON 3x zoom lens gives you a 5.6 ~ 16.8 mm optical zoom range (equivalent to 34 ~ 102 mm on a 35-mm film camera) for a wide range of zoom framing options from wide angle to telephoto. Combine this with 2x digital zoom and you have up to an outstanding 6x zoom range. Exceptionally fast zoom operation - wide to telephoto in 0.8 seconds - means you can frame and shoot in an instant.

You can record movies with sound as long as your memory card capacity allows. Use high-capacity memory for extra long recording time.

Shoot flowers, accessories, or other small subjects full frame. At the wide end of the zoom range the Normal Macro mode lets you get as close as 5 cm (2.0 inches) from the subject. At telephoto you have Normal Macro mode focus as close as 50 cm (1.7 feet), and there's Super Macro for shots as close as 20 cm (7.9 inches).

In the Program AE Mode the camera automatically determines the optimum aperture and shutter speed settings for each shot. In the Aperture Priority mode you set the aperture manually, and the camera sets the ideal shutter speed to match for optimum exposure. There's also a 4-way button for easy selection of the AF Fixed, AE Fixed, Exposure Compensation, or White Balance functions, giving you extra creative control.

Create a set of custom settings including a total of 20 parameters when shooting in the manual mode. Custom settings can be memorized and deleted as required. Slow shutter speed can be finely adjusted for each flash mode. This can be particularly effective when shooting evening or night scenes.

This mode lets you manually select shutter speeds from 15 ~ 1/1000 seconds, and gives you a choice of F2.8 or F4.7 aperture settings so you have extensive creative control. When shutter speeds slower than 1/2 second are selected noise reduction is automatically activated, allowing you to shoot images with minimum noise even at slow shutter speeds.

This function automatically produces 3 images for each shot you take, with " bracketed " (slight over and under variations) exposure and/or focus settings. Focus bracketing can be particularly valuable for macro shots where precise focus is critical.

Exposure compensation is the ideal way to lighten or darken your scenes to match your creative mood. Exposure can be adjusted by +2.0EV ~ -2.0EV in 1/3-EV steps.

For moving or difficult-to-focus subjects, the focus can be fixed to infinity, 2.5 meters (8.3 feet), 1. Use the Digital Subject Program Selection to automatically set up for optimum image quality with a broad range of subjects. A selection of 6 programs make it easy to create stunning images in a variety of conditions.

Use color effects to express an emotion or enhance a mood. In addition to the standard colors, black-and-white, and sepia, there's a warm color mode that's ideal for people or sunsets, and a cold color effect that can be great for scenic shots. That's 5 extra ways to express yourself.

Buttons for these often-used functions are located right on top of the camera for easy access. You can directly select playback or delete no matter what mode is currently active.

Most operations are carried out via a bright backlit 1.5-type LCD monitor. A unique icon + text menu system makes accessing and setting parameters easier than ever, even if you've never used a digital camera before.

LCD monitor brightness and color balance can easily be adjusted for optimum visibility under prevailing light conditions - even outdoors where most monitors tend to be dark and difficult to see.

Dual Slot design allows you to use SD memory cards or Memory Stick media according to your needs. This means your camera is compatible with the widest possible range of digital equipment. You can even use both media types simultaneously to allow high-volume shooting and storage, change media types according to the application, and copy data from one media type to the other for significantly enhanced data-management potential.

For power the G 400 employs an environment-friendly high-capacity lithium-ion battery. And thanks to an energy-efficient design, battery life has been significantly extended so you can shoot longer.

You can easy resize your images for mail attachment or posting on a web page. The Resize function creates a new compact file, leaving the original image intact.

By transferring your image files to an Exif-standard printer you can directly create photo-quality prints.

No driver software required for compatibility with USB mass storage devices. Just connect to your computer via the supplied USB cable and your images will be transferred.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Buy !!, 26 Mar 2004
By Anita Henderson (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I bought this camera for my recent trip to New Zealand where I took 600 photos, so it's had a good test run. What a great buy! So much better than my previous digital cameras. It's a handy pocket size, the battery lasts for over a full day of continuous use with the viewer on, it looks great, the screen is visible in the sunlight, but what I'm most pleased about is that it starts up immediately and takes a picture with no delay at all (my biggest complaint about all other digital cameras I've used). And, most importantly, the quality of the pictures is excellent. I can't recommend this camera highly enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars very impressed 5 Star quality you would expect from £240+, 3 Oct 2004
This compact camera works very well, the picture's have deep vibrant colours sharp clear images with every picture.
In auto all you have to do is point and shoot,in manual you have lot's of settings to play with (you can even control the brightness of the flash)although i havent had time to get familiar with them all yet.The photos taken in the dark are fantastic,if it is to dark for the camera to auto focus you can use standard focus distance's 0.8 m 1.2m 2.5m or long distance (infinaty),also in manual you can use auto bracket focus or auto bracket exposure which takes 3 shots of different focus lenght's or exposure and you can then pick the best one..
The metal construction seem's very good qulity and robust, the camera also start's fast.
Movies and audio taken with this camera seem good enough for a camera not soley dedicated to movie making..
Anyone who says they get bad photos in the dark (common with alot of digi cameras) with this camera has not used any manual settings...
I also bought 256mb bytestor sd card (very cheap and is Toshiba maked on back) from amazon 200 pics aprox @ 4m pixel standard, 148 pics aprox @ 4 m pixels fine ..also 5 Star

    5.0 out of 5 stars Dimage G400, 20 Jul 2004
This camera is very good value. Easy to use (after figuring out what some of the more obscure symbols mean). It has a quick start up to picture time, excellent battery life and its compatible with memory sticks and SD cards (simultaneously). The picture quality is excellent in good light, you need to be a little more careful in low light or in awkward shooting situations.

I've got a higher spec. digital camera, but I bought this pocket-sized camera for convenience and its low price means I take it places where I would worry about an expensive piece of kit. I've been pleasantly surprised by its build quality and output.

All in all a great buy.
