Epson C84 and C82 printers, 29 Oct 2004
We have used Epson printers for years at our printing company, and they were always excellent products. The older 760 and 880 printers served us well. Our brand loyalty continued and when the Durabrite ink printers (C82 and C84) came onto the market we bought them, but they have been a big disappointment. The C82 and C84 printers have been unreliable. If the printer is unused for even a few days, the head has to be cleaned. If you don't use it for a week or two you will probably find that the print head has become clogged and you get missing lines and streaks. If you are lucky, after half a dozen cleaning cycles you may get it printing again, but this doesn't always work. If you want to read some interesting stories from people ready to throw their Epson out of the window, check the internet and try a search on "Epson clogged print head" or similar. Lot's of angry users. To be fair to Epson, intensive users will probably not have this problem. If you print black/white and colour images day in day out, you may find the Epson fits the bill perfectly. The Durabrite ink is excellent, bright, non-smudging. But it's no good if the printer won't print! I use my printer regularly, but there are times when it's not used for a day or two. I had 2 weeks holiday this summer, came back and my Epson had given up. After several hours of cursing, attempts to clean the head with tissue etc, I gave up and bought a Canon iP 3000. This was the third time in a few months I had struggled to get the Epson running and I just couldn't waste any more time on it. Other users at work had exactly the same problems, and we are gradually switching to Canon. So there you go. Get a C84 if you are going to work it hard and you need the Durabrite ink. Otherwise stay away and get something else. I checked the reviews and the Canons seem to get consistently good feedback. Too early to say much about this, but I will post a review in due course as we are now running 4 of them.
