I heard of this cd on the world service when they played the track "Paris Dakar" and have never been so determined to get a cd before.
It is French African hip hop/rap but is stuffed with more rhythm than than a chart full of the american kind. You don't need to understand french to get the messages of joy, love confusion, and dispair of modern Africa. In fact the french language vocals add to the flow of the songs, being more tuneful when rapped than english tends to be.
Its hard to pick tracks to single out when it is all good but the aformentioned "Paris Dakar" just manages to be my favorite and is the track you will play to others to demonstrate the qualities of this cd but it is also the nearest to normal rap.
So i will also pick out "Esperanza" (featuring twice with an extented version closing the cd) which is Caribbean in feel showing how far African music has travelled to home to this wonderful example of home grown product.
And "Hip Hop Civilization" closes the circle by possessing many examples of tricks you may find in american music but still sounding original here.
I'm finding it hard to pick out tracks as I listen because each has its own reasons to be heard so why not buy it yourself and have something truely original in your collection as it will appeal to all who like rap, hip hop, soul or reggee as its all here in an original form.

I am going to make this review short and simple. From the moment you first listen to this album, it is simply one of the best albums that you are ever likely to hear. So go out and buy it.

I have just got back from watching DAARA J live at teh Sage in Newcastle, and although I usually copy mates CDs for my music needs, I have just bought this album on amazon. The album has the same tracks as were performed live, and it is heavy. Very upbeat, bassy and highly recommended.
