5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this film, 12 Feb 2004
By S. Morris "Shamus" (Staffs, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Saw this film on a shelf in Blockbuster. Noticed it was about Thailand and thought what the heck, might be like "the beach" or "brokedown palace" with a few fleeting shots of places that I know.... How wrong could I be! This is the Thailand that I love, the atmosphere, the people, the scenery (espeichally North East Thailand toward the end of the film). Shot in Thailand with Thai actors and a director who obviously loves the country as much as I do.
My heart almost jumped out of my chest at a scene as they sped past Khon Kaen. The village life, the sandy roads, the children playing, the family, the monks... It's all spot on. The director actually understands the people and doesn't just try to put some bland westernised view on the country. From the opening shots he tells it as it is (and shows westerners how we are!). The main character is someone that I empathise with (and am jealous of because he is still there), a westerner in love with the country and the people. He understands that this place does something to you (if you let it rather than sitting by the pool for two weeks) from which there is no going back. You cannot get it out of your blood even if you wanted to. Every perfectly shot frame of this picture shouts such emotion from the rooftops... And as the credits rolled I rushed to my PC to try and buy this film as quickly as possible.
I think that says it all. Basically I was impressed and if it wasn't nearly midnight I would go downstairs and watch it all over again! Blockbuster stand absolutely no chance of getting this back on Friday night. Darn the late return charges I'm just going to watch it on repeat till I get my copy from Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Butterfly Man, 10 Jan 2004
By A Customer
Each country has a beautiful side and an ugly side. Thailand, the Land of Smiles is no exception. This movie follows Adams highs and lows as he discovers the beauties of Koh Samui a tropical paradise. It portrays some the the things I love about Thailand, especially the culture and family life. It also shows a more seedy side that tourists may not see. People struggling to earn enough money to provide for families far away, entrapment and a yearning for a better life. This film is one of the best stories I have seen about Thailand and puts 'The Beach' to shame. It has everything the Beach should have had and it is made on a far smaller budget. A must see film.

1.0 out of 5 stars This film is so awful it borders on the comical, 2 Jun 2005
By A Customer
This is a disastrous attempt to depict the relationship between a prostitute and a tourist fleeing from the disillusionment of some ghetto in Western Europe.
The storyline is weak and the interaction between the protagonists is not at all persuasive. Rather than provide some twists, the director prefers to reiterate every possible cliche. Hence, the story is devoid of any originality or intelligence.
If this were a 'cult' film (as one reviewer declares...) it would have been noticed by at least one of the main film festivals. Instead, it has only been noticed by people with an infatuation for certain types of women.
Alternatively, for a more meaningful account of Thai society, I would confidently suggest "Mysterious object at noon" or "Tropical Malady'. And yes, these films do not feature hapless backpackers in search of 'romance' and 'adventure'...

5.0 out of 5 stars Thai paradise lost
Excellent cult film. Pity it didn't get a wider distribution.
