5.0 out of 5 stars A Single As It Should Be, 28 Mar 2007
By Mr. P. A. Brown "tgghpg1" (Cheltenham, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Undervalued is a term applicable to both the acoustically masterful Mountain Goats, and to music singles in general. Seeming like a slice of album, these three tracks take the listener on a journey that is both unexpected and thought-provoking. Indeed the single does immense credit both to Darnielle's musical ability, and to his unwillingness to settle for ideas and images that have been long over-used.

The title track for the single, Palmcorder Yajna bubbles and bounces along at a jaunty pace, and yet is tempered with a fatalistic humanity. Its jangling guitar and progressive drum pattern are mixed with lyrics that insist upon the recognition of life's harsh realities. Such realities are also reflected in the background chugging of an electric guitar, and the harsh snap of the forceibly beaten snare drum. Insistent vocalisation is utilised to guarantee the listener's attention, and enforce the seemingly conflicted feeling of the track.

Darnielle's delivery changes from insistencey to urgencey as the second song, Butter Teeth, begins its ominous progression into the listener's brain. Guided by its determined bass and quirky guiro this track reveals the full range of Darnielle's lyricism. Consistently creating images through unusual Metaphor, the listener is taken from fortress to pharmacy, becoming shoplifting Norweigan electricity in the process. This track is emminently worthy of a place on any Mountain Goats album, and would have been a rising star on the fantastically full-ranged 'We Shall All Be Healed' album that the single, Palmcorder Yajna, was taken from.

After such immediacy and rapidity, Snakeheads comes as a calming release. The bass that drove the previous track is now content to join the piano in a leisurely trip to "the islands". Still the storyteller, Darnielle also conveys the ideality of these islands through his excellent arrangement of instruments. Occasionally the simple piano will stroll out on its own, sometimes it will be accompanied by a spiritual tremelo organ. It is a song that mentally soothes, and serves to leave the single with a relaxed and promising after-taste.

The diversity of lyrics, vocals and instrumentation throughout this single make it as complete a record with only three songs as one is ever likely to hear. Those that simply purchase the Mounatin Goat's albums, or worse still, ignore John Darnielle all together, are truly missing out.
