DVD Description

Golden Globe winner Cate Blanchett (The Lord of the Rings, Elizabeth) stars in Veronica Guerin, the critically acclaimed, powerful and poignant true story about a journalist who risked her life in search of the truth. In the mid-1990s, Dublin was nothing short of a war zone, with a few powerful drug lords battling for control. Their most fearsome opponent was not the police but the courageous Veronica Guerin (Blanchett), who investigated and exposed the ‘pushers’, balancing her home and family against her responsibility to her readers and her country. Because of her intense efforts, she became a national folk heroine and changed Ireland forever. From producer Jerry Bruckheimer (Pearl Harbor) and director Joel Schumacher (Bad Company), Veronica Guerin is a suspense-filled and thrilling story that will have you on the edge of your seat.

Synopsis

VERONICA GUERIN, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Joel Schumacher, is the true story of the tenacious Irish crime reporter (Cate Blanchett) who exposed the brutal drug trade in 1990s Dublin. Veronica Guerin's intense dedication to her journalism, reckless hunger for the truth, and profound sense of social responsibility is grippingly portrayed by Blanchett in a magnetic performance.
Told in flashback, the film begins at the moment of her brutal assassination in 1996 and moves backwards, telling the story of the last two years of her life. A competitive journalist with no drug background, Veronica started her fierce campaign against Dublin's drug trade after witnessing young children playing with hypodermic needles in the city's slums. At that moment she started interviewing addicts and small-time thugs and what she discovered eventually led her into a fiercely protected inner circle of drug kingpins, controlled by the viciously powerful John Gilligan (Gerard McSorley). What began as a search for a story became Veronica's obsession. Her quest overshadowed her duties as a wife and mother and eventually threatened the lives of her husband and child. Heroic yet reckless, she persevered, and after threats and violent beatings she was assassinated by the very gangsters she threatened to expose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uplifting and sad at the same time, 6 May 2004
By Sebastian Fernandez (Tampa, Florida United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
This movie, based on the true life of Irish journalist for the Sunday Independent Veronica Guerin, is uplifting and sad in unison. I found myself amazed at the courage shown by this woman in facing the organized crime in Ireland, fighting to make the world a better place by exposing these people. On the other side, it is sad to know that her quest had nefarious results for her and her family. This is one of the best movies I have seen this year, and knowing that these events really happened lifts it to another level for me.

The movie starts with the shooting of Veronica after she gets out from court where she was facing charges on twelve hundred parking violations and a couple of speeding tickets for going over one hundred miles per hour. Then, the action goes back and starts revealing how the journalist got to that point. Veronica Guerin was a journalist that felt empty when writing casual and non-critical articles, so when she is assigned to the crime section, she finds a cause she can embrace. In Ireland, the drug trade has driven crimes rates to a record high, and a myriad of youngsters are living in the streets, having only one desire...to get high. Veronica's quest consists in connecting the drugs to the crime lords and bring the organization down. To do this she starts relentlessly pursuing these dangerous people and gets her family and herself into dangerous situations. "The Monk", "The Coach" and "The General", among others, are getting nervous.

While watching this movie you will find yourself cheering for the heroine, and getting worried and scared for what may happen to her and her family. Cate Blanchett has a stellar performance, which makes the character even more likable. This actress focuses a good part of her time on plays, but I would really love if she decided to devote a larger part of her time to movies, which is what I usually have access to.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 18 Sep 2006
By Teemacs (Switzerland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I was back in Ireland just a few weeks after the murder of Veronica Guerin and it was still reverberating around the country. It did have the advantage of taking people's attention away from the Nutty North and marching season and the annual confrontation of Drumcree. As one Irish newspaper put it (sort of), we have enough problems of our own down here without bothering about two lots of eejits who want to fight each other. With increasing prosperity, the Irish drug scene expanded dramatically and with it the arrival of vicious organised crime, with even the IRA, for all its lofty Republican rhetoric, getting involved.

Living abroad, I know little about Guerin's style (apart from the fact that it was brave bordering on irresponsibly reckless). Her editor seemed to let her get away with murder, possibly (one could cynically think) because all the controversy sold papers.

Judging the film on its own merits, I found it excellent. Cate Blanchett, a dinki di Aussie, does a great job with the accent and the acting of both Ms. Blanchett and the supporting cast, are generally first rate. It's been a long time since I've seen a villain as menacing and frightening as John Gilligan. But did the real Ms. Guerin really get around the seediest areas of Dublin in glamorous, beautifully-cut pants suits? That aside, the only disconnect comes when Ms. Blanchett shows total lack of fear in confronting gangsters and then turns into a terrified jelly when beaten up/shot. I would have expected a bit more fear in the confrontations rather than the extreme nonchalance evinced by Ms. Blanchett. Nevertheless, a very good film.

A superb film, Cate Blanchett is totally convincing in the title role as a reporter investigating the drugs trade in Ireland. Gritty and highly emotional. Well worth 5 stars.
