A Long Wait, 14 Nov 2003
It's been nearly 7 years since Sarah McLachlan's last studio album, the multi-platinum Surfacing, which included a UK hit single in Adia. Sarah is huge in North America but remains a well kept secret here apart from her collaboration with Delerium, Silence.Afterglow isn't a radical departure from Surfacing, despite the wait. However it's highly satisfying and when it's good, it's very, very good. Best tracks for me are Time, Train Wreck, and Dirty Little Secret...a killer closer track. Lyrically some of the songs are a little weak...Push in particular and the lead single, Fallen, while catchy enough, doesn't compare to Building A Mystery, the lead song from Surfacing or Possession (her best song) from Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. Sarah's voice is for me her greatest strength, and she sounds better than ever here. She has a power, passion and strength very few other singers seem to achieve. The past 7 years have seen great change in her personal life...she lost her mother to cancer and shortly afterwards became a mother herself, but musically little has changed...Sarah is still working with her musical partner Pierre Merchand and still making beautiful music. Not her finest (that's Fumbling Towards Ecstasy) but better than just about anything else out there right now.
