Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Is Sarah McLachlan a secret punk rocker? To be sure, her rebellion is hushed. On Afterglow, her first studio album since 1997's Surfacing, McLachlan's music is as tempered as ever; at times, even the piano chords at the heart of the sound are tucked neatly beneath layer upon layer of strings and overdubbed voices. Listen to what's being sung within this soothing aural bed, though, and hear the just-before-sleep murmurings of the quietest riot grrl: "I'm a train wreck waiting to happen... a wildfire born of frustration", "How stupid could I be... you're no good for me, but you're the only one I see", "I have to push just to see how far you'll go". The latter song ("Push") resolves itself with the assurance "You complete me". Ultimately, McLachlan fans will be comforted again by what turns out to be her reliably untroubled aesthetic. --Rickey Wright

4.0 out of 5 stars A Long Wait, 14 Nov 2003
By Joyce (Glasgow, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
It's been nearly 7 years since Sarah McLachlan's last studio album, the multi-platinum Surfacing, which included a UK hit single in Adia. Sarah is huge in North America but remains a well kept secret here apart from her collaboration with Delerium, Silence.

Afterglow isn't a radical departure from Surfacing, despite the wait. However it's highly satisfying and when it's good, it's very, very good. Best tracks for me are Time, Train Wreck, and Dirty Little Secret...a killer closer track.

Lyrically some of the songs are a little weak...Push in particular and the lead single, Fallen, while catchy enough, doesn't compare to Building A Mystery, the lead song from Surfacing or Possession (her best song) from Fumbling Towards Ecstasy.

Sarah's voice is for me her greatest strength, and she sounds better than ever here. She has a power, passion and strength very few other singers seem to achieve.

The past 7 years have seen great change in her personal life...she lost her mother to cancer and shortly afterwards became a mother herself, but musically little has changed...Sarah is still working with her musical partner Pierre Merchand and still making beautiful music.

Not her finest (that's Fumbling Towards Ecstasy) but better than just about anything else out there right now.

5.0 out of 5 stars good stuff!!, 15 Nov 2003
Been absolutely ages since anything new has been released from Sarah Mclachlan, and it is a continutation of 'Surfacing', which is only a good thing. Stand out tracks after only a couple of listens are 'Fallen' and 'Push'. Only problem is that unlike on 'Surfacing' there isn't a standout track that hits you straight away, like Adia and Angel did. The album as a whole is consistenly good, and sounds bang up to date. Perfect music to chill-out to. If you like Dido and people like her then there is no reason why you shouldn't like Sarah Mclachlan.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't produce the goods, 14 Nov 2003
By Alison (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
This album starts off well, but loses it's zing. Considering it's been five years coming, I had hoped for something much more impressive. The first track, Fallen, which has been a hit in the States, is the best on the album, and is the only one which instantly grabs you. "Train Wreck" is well constructed, but the lyrics "I'm a train wreck waiting to happen" just jar. They aren't like Sarah's usual highly poetic and meaningful songs. The gripping melodies and angelic harmonies are missing too. The music is predominantly guitar and piano, and lacks any interesting effects as in her other work. Her voice is still beautiful and shines through though.

If you are a fan, it's worth having, but if you're looking for a first purchase by Sarah McLachlan, choose something else!
