5.0 out of 5 stars Why can't all Consumer Electronics be like this?, 5 Dec 2003
So, I plug the reciever in to my TV, switch it on, vaguely think about looking at the manual (in "bloke-mode" again) and whilst I am doing this the magic little grey box has automatically started its setup routine. It then goes on to scan the frequencies itself, finds the correct location of loads of new channels itself, installs them itself, and then politely tells me via an on-screen menu that everything is 100% OK. My vague disappointment that I won't get to fiddle about with buttons, manual tuning and other such bloke-things is quickly forgotten as I immediately find a programme about WW2 aircraft carriers on the freeview history channel to watch for 10 minutes before I realise I actually have to go out, and tear myself away from it. Perfect!

So, consumer electronics items that work straight out of the box - amazing! And all this happened despite what is sometimes dodgy reception through our aerial on some of our non-digital channels as well! I now have perfect digital TV & radio with no probvlem at all. Compulsive tech-heads may be disappointed, but for anyone else this is a brilliant piece of kit!

5.0 out of 5 stars Purchase of the Century, 23 Aug 2004
I was a bit wary about buying a freeview box as my reception is pretty bad, through lack of rooftop aerial and being surrounded by walls, (which is the cause of ghosting), so my thoughts were to go towards either a roof top aerial or connecting to cable.
I bought the Philips DTR1500 as had read a few reviews where people only had an indoor aerial connected, and that the box created better reception (so I chanced it!). When I plugged the box in and installed, I could not believe how good the picture was, absolutely perfect.
    Later..
Had a bit of a problem later when certain channels started to freeze (lack of reception) got a bit upset, but expected it in a way.
I have now resolved the problem as when the box scans all channels it is picking up the signals from the position of the aerial, when the scan is complete the aerial should not be moved as this will cause freezing. Whenever the aerial is moved you must re-scan. The way to do this is to turn the box off, take out the aerial from rear of box, wait for 10mins, turn on box (without aerial connected) scan for channels (this will take seconds as no aerial connected)this will take the box back to factory setting, turn box off, position aerial in the best position, re-connect aerial to box, wait for 10mins, turn on box, re-scan.
This is exactly what I did, and can receive all freeview channels without freezing, the picture quality is 100% even though I'm using a 15 year old TV. Am well chuffed with my purchase especially buying it when the Olympics is on with interaction.
I do not Guarantee that this will work for everyone but my reception before I bought this box was PANTS. Best to make sure you are in the freeview reception area first.
The aerial I'm using is a Philips SBCTT650 Indoor aerial. Also make sure you use the scart/leads which are provided.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to digital TV, 26 Jan 2004
By Glen Vaal "Passionate about Music" (Guildford, Surrey) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I wanted to know what digital TV was all about but couldn't find a "What Freeview receiver" guide. I chose this because of the Philips name and low price. It's excellent. Really easy to set up. I'm using a simple indoor aerial on the windowsill. You simply wire it up and click OK. It finds all the channels for you, though this takes a few minutes. The picture is very high quality and everything works as described. Surprisingly even the old analogue channels look better. The back is full of different sockets, I gather from the manual that it's very versatile (stereo outputs etc).

Can I complain about anything? Well, it's quite large compared to other models (260 x 230 x 60 mm) but seems very well built. From my experience I'd recommend it to anyone wanting an easy introduction, however DO go to www.freeview.co.uk to check whether you can expect to receive a good signal at your postcode.
