Once again Jack ‘n’ Meg turn in another astonishing blast of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The lead-in drum, that climbing guitar riff, the urgent vocals – this is The White Stripes at their most anthemic. Quite what Jack is actually singing about I’m not sure but who cares? You can be sure that when Meg’s drums hammer along to the chorus you’ll be singing along. The b-side is a cover of The Soledad Brothers’ ‘St Ides of March’. With Jack’s vocal the song is given a more proto-punk vibe than the Soledad’s purely blues original. Finally, if you own ‘Elephant’ get this single anyway because it includes the incredible video to ‘Hardest Button to Button’. Worth the asking price alone just to see Jack sport a dodgy goatee beard!
