DVD Description

Jimi Plays Berkeley showcases some of Jimi’s finest ever performances filmed over two concerts at the Berkeley Community Theatre on May 30th, 1970. The film documented the political unrest and student uprisings in Berkeley juxtaposed against such legendary Hendrix live performances of Johnny B. Goode, Hear My Train A Comin’, I Don’t Live Today, Machine Gun, Purple Haze, Star Spangled Banner and Voodoo Chile (Slight Return). This special DVD edition also features a new digital picture transfer of the original documentary film and, for the first time, a soundtrack remixed in both stereo and 5.1 audio surround sound by Eddie Kramer, Jimi Hendrix’s original engineer.

Special Features

  • Audio-only bonus concert recordings (in 5.1 Surround Sound) of the following tracks:
    Pass It On (Straight Ahead)
    Hey Baby (New Sun Rising)
    Lover Man
    Stone Free
    Hey Joe
    I Don’t Live Today
    Machine Gun
    Foxy Lady
    Star Spangled Banner
    Purple Haze
    Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)

DVD Technical Information:

  • Running Time: 49 minutes (documentary), audio concert (67 minutes)
  • Audio: 5.1 and 2.0 Stereo
  • Region Code: 0 (All)

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear..............., 17 Nov 2003
By Daryl Gardner (Kingswinford) - See all my reviews
This is basically a case of could of done better. I have to admit that the 5.1 soundtrack is amazing but the "remastered" picture is poor at best. Its 4:3 full screen and grainy as hell.

You basically get the terrible documentry " Jimi Hendrix at Berkeley " and some dull features you can find on any other (and better) Hendrix DVD.

The good news is the 67minute Audio Only second set of the Berkeley concert. This is complete and exactly the same as the CD version. It has standout tracks such as "Hey Baby" and " Straight Ahead" but still doesnt contain the best tracks off the first set, "Johnny B. Goode" and "Hear my Train A Comin". Why couldnt thay have released a complete concert containing both sets?

Now the Bad News, the documentry. Lifted straight from the video, this is very poor and one of the poorest attempts to cash in on Hendrix ever. Don't be fooled by the track listing, nearly every track is cut. For example, Lover Man should be about 4 minutes long but lasts for a mere 50 seconds on this DVD. Here my Train A Comin is also here, but has been cut from 11 minutes to 4 minutes. Instead of top quality concert footage we are left with crap camara work ( shaking the camara for effect) and footage of street riots during Machine Gun. What the hell does this have to do with Hendrix. Very Poor.

The reason I gave this 2stars is because it's Hendrix and the best we can get of the Berkeley concert. If you want Hendrix, buy Blue Wild Angel or Woodstock. If you want Berkeley, buy the CD and avoid this pointless dross.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been so fantastic!, 24 Mar 2004
By Fungus of Terror (Huddersfield) - See all my reviews
Yes, this is Jimi at his blistering best, and as such should get 5 stars and beyond. But I watched in horror as most tracks - most notably the awesome version of Hear My Train.. which featured on the Rainbow Bridge vinyl LP and was to my mind the heaviest ever Hendrix recording - are brutally butchered down to a few minutes long by some half deaf cretin.
Such a shame, and yet it is STILL brilliant as Jimi is on such fantastic form, unlike the laboured Woodstock and frankly bad Isle of Wight.....buy it anyway..

3.0 out of 5 stars This could've been so great release..., 26 Feb 2006
By KoKy_the_rock_maniac (Split, Croatia) - See all my reviews
..but unfortunately Michael Jeffrey or whoever had cut it so badly that now it is just an average DVD of Jimi Hendrix' performance. Only because of omitting so vast parts of his whole 2 performances.

You can see from these 'bits' that Jimi was at his best, powerful and electrifying, like he was at the performance at the Isle of Maui, Hawaii. It was just somehow different from performances at Woodstock or Isle of Wight, not necessarily better, but wilder - with Jimi playing like a little exalted child.

This DVD, however, features only 'chops' of these stunning performances, and intact song is only Johhny B. Goode, which is uncut. Voodoo Child s/r and Machine Gun are indeed long, but if you listen closer and compare them to audio-only performances (which are featured on this DVD too, but only of 2nd set) you'll notice that they are shorter, and therefore cut. Which can really piss of a true fan who has no understanding for stupidities like this.

Good points of this release that repair the damage to some degree are that it features before-mentioned complete Berkeley 2nd set in 5.1 Dolby Surround (audio-only), and very good booklet with explanation of what had happened with original masters of this footage plus great shots of Jimi performing and pics of original posters and tickets.

My hope is that one sunny day we'll see release of the complete, uninterrupted concert footage, remastered from original tapes that were thought-to-be-lost, but at the end unexplainably popped up to see the light of the day!
