DVD Description

Jon Bennet (Andrew Howard) is an ideal employee: neat, efficient and conscientious. Nobody would guess that this self-conscious introvert tortures and kills to earn his living. Jon works for the Tattooed Man (David Calder), an awesome figure with cruel taste, who in return takes care of Jon. By chance, Jon encounters Andy (Andrew Tieran) and Cathy (Geraldine O’Rawe) – old friends from school, now married. As Jon finds himself drawn towards Cathy in a way he has never experienced before, he begins to question everything that he has become. Torn between Cathy and the Tattooed Man, he becomes Mr In-Between. But the Tattooed Man will not tolerate a rival. Jon must act – and fast. Everything is at stake: the safety of his friends and the redemption of his soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended if you like dark thrillers..., 28 Jan 2004

...this one stands out from the crowd. It has the power to shock, and the ending chills you to the bone...

Mr In-Between has an intelligent, literate script, which takes a swipe at the philosophical pretensions of some of the characters, while never flinching from exploring the consequences of their actions. It also sports a unique, quirky tone - it's cold and gritty on one level, but also surreal and nightmarish on another. Plus a finely graduated performance from Andrew Howard as the anti-hero Jon, and a scene-stealing one from David Calder as his mentor/lover/father figure the Tattooed Man.

All this is beautifully packaged by Paul Sarossy's superb ice cool visuals (following on from his award-winning work on Atom Egoyan's films) and a well-chosen score, which provides a running thread of pitch-black humour. It's a film which asks difficult questions and leaves you with something to think about. And how many films can boast that?

4.0 out of 5 stars Compelling British Gangster Movie, 20 Oct 2009
By Mr. S. Wood "simonwood27" (london) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Not your typical big budget gangster flick..you know the type? the Hitman is harder than arnie on steriods, beats up all the bad guys, gets revenge and rescues the girl....this is a good, solid and quite depressing film about a hitman torn between his loyalty to his boss and the chance meeting of an old friend which stirs up the possibilities of him leading a 'normal' life....
The acting is decent, certainly from the lead, andrew howard (Jon) and shows although tough and relentless he is also capable of being human.
Sure, some of the acting is ropey and the set pieces seem quite contrived and cliched..but hey, it's not meant to be perfect, we'll leave that to hollywood and their billion dollar budgets..!!
..as for the ending, all I will say is that you can see it coming and it ain't the hollywood version!!

This film is dark! A brooding violent gangster film. Very nihilistic. It is probably quite overlooked, but do not miss the chance to see it. Read more
