Amazon.co.uk Review
The Man Who Sued God defies simple definition, managing to be several types of movie all at the same time. As a theological-romantic-comedy-drama, it's in a somewhat unique category all of its own. Perhaps only Billy Connolly could carry off a central role that combines slapstick with raging anger, puppy-dog disappointment and strong language delivered in his distinctive accent. These facets of performance are used and abused in a tale that feels like it really ought to be based on a true story, but isn't.

Connolly's life as a fisherman is sunk by the destruction of his boat by a bolt of lightning. The insurance company won't pay up because it falls under that age-old excuse of being an "Act of God". So Connolly decides to sue the deity. The premise raises issues about how the law and the church have apparently conspired together. But at heart the film is a simple character study, so any pondering on legal or theological implications will have to be done on your own time; the screen is occupied with family issues, underhand dealings and a maybe-maybe romance with Judy Davis. Big Yin fans at least will enjoy the Connolly's composite character. --Paul Tonks

4.0 out of 5 stars Good fun, 22 Oct 2006

This is a light hearted, fun film. I love the idea behind it, as well as some of the arguments used in the film. Billy is excellent as a typically (For him!) opinionated man who tells it like it is. A great film for lazy Sunday afternoons when you want to be entertained and not think too hard! Give it a go.

4.0 out of 5 stars Billy at his Best., 17 Feb 2004
This for me is Billy Connolly at his best. Bad language from the start - but what else can you expect, apart from brilliant acting. An excellent, imaginative and very thought provoking storyline. A must for all Billy Connolly fanatics and a must for all doubters of insurance companies. Highly funny, certainly one of the best i've seen in a while - great entertainment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!!! (If you like Billy), 22 Jan 2004
Well, admittedly the first time I watched it I thought the film itself wasn't the most riveting film I have watched, however Billy's performance is truly mesmerizing - Billy is exactly how you would expect him to behave in everyday public.

However I have since watched the film at least 8 more times in the space of 12 weeks and each time, I still thoroughly enjoy Billy. The film itself continues to grow on me and the storyline is cracking (this coming from a legal background!).

If you like Billy, buy it. If you aren't a huge fan, then rent it before buying it. It you are in a passing phase of Billy Connolly comedy, don't buy it because it will not meet your expectations of a great film.
