Tonus Peregrinus and Antony Pitts return this month with another sublime performance. In a step away from the repertoire that has earned them huge critical acclaim, this new release has a seasonal twist: a programme of Christmas carols both new and old. Such was the success of Tonus Peregrinus previous CDs that Naxos commissioned Antony Pitts to put together a CD of carols. The programme comprises Pitts arrangements of well-known carols such as The holly and the ivy, Hark the herald angels sing and O come, all ye faithful, but also includes Pitts own original compositions. There are 24 carols on the disc, one for each day of Advent.

At this time of year, albums of Christmas carols are ten a penny and we need something a little different to make us sit up and take notice. In The Naxos Book Of Carols we have that something a little different; even the well-known pieces are shown with new sound colours so that once again we can hear them afresh. With fine arrangements and clear singing, this disk is a very welcome addition to anyone's Christmas collection and in the sensitive way it takes us through the Christmas story, we are given something which is both reflective and joyous.

The label says correctly that it is a selection of carols old and new, and that the settings are all new. What it doesn't make clear enough is that the settings are all modern in style - very trendy with occasional dissonance and harmonies that jar badly - not at all appropriate when dealing with mediaeval carols and plainsong. New carols and fresh arrangements are good and make carols come alive. These are OTT and disappointing.
