Product Description

CD Description

George Harrison was always known as the Beatle with the most pronounced interest in spirituality and distaste for earthly contrivances. The intensity of feeling, palpable here in the performances of Harrison's musical friends at his memorial concert, mirrors the depth of emotion on the part of the millions touched by "the quiet Beatle"'s work over the years. The first disc of this live recording features musical tributes from Harrison's Indian mentor Ravi Shankar and Shankar's sitar-virtuoso daughter Anoushka--fitting for a Brit who pioneered the incorporation of Eastern flavours into 1960s rock.
The second disc is a full-on rock-star tribute, but instead of the overkill one might expect with so much rock royalty involved (including musical director Eric Clapton), the result is a straightforward, perfectly rendered, and touchingly sincere program of Harrison's finest compositions. From fellow travelers Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr's respective versions of "All Things Must Pass" and "Photograph" to early British rocker/Beatles influence Joe Brown's humble take on "Here Comes the Sun", CONCERT FOR GEORGE overflows withhonest outpourings of love and fine performances in equal measure.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fitting tribute, 27 May 2004
By Jimmy "city_lad" (London) - See all my reviews

This two disc set is the soundtrack for one of the best gigs I have ever seen. I remember hearing about the Concert for George on the night it went ahead and feeling awful because I did not have (nor could I find) a ticket to go. The line up is magnificent - Eric Clapton, Jeff Lynne, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston are among the talent on display here - and the songs (which are virtually all George Harrison penned) are extraordinary. To pick out highlights is almost impossible - but Billy Preston singing 'Isn't it a Pity', McCartney playing 'Something' on a ukele, and Joe Brown's smiling performances are standout.
The first disc features the first half of the concert itself - Raavi Shankar, his talented daughter and a magnificent Indian Orchestra play some unique pieces written especially for this occasion and it is truly breathtaking - tragically perhaps we are not treated to the Monty Python songs that followed it in the concert itself (and the DVD). The second disc is why I really bought it though - I have enormous admiration for the first section of the concert, but what follows is magnificent - the stage is filled with talented musicians and thanks to the very underplayed introductions from Eric Clapton (who was responsible for the evening) there is no room for ego. This assures the real star of the evening is the man who gave the world such great music - George Harrison.
Bravo to all involved.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Magical Night, 12 Dec 2003
I'm embarrased to say that the main reason that I got this CD was because it features Jeff Lynne who's music I worship.

If you look at the star line-up and the track list, it should be enough to persuade you to buy it.

I've not had much experience with George or his music before but this is an absolute gem of an album.

Where else would you find all these artist singing together? Under the musicl direction of Eric Clapton there is Joe Brown, Jeff Lynne, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney and more.

The magic and presence of George comes through on this CD and the DVD.

The songs are just beautiful.
