4.0 out of 5 stars Good value, good coffee, good looks..., 14 Jan 2006
With the dearth of filter coffee makers around, it can be hard to know what to choose... many look fabulous but have numerous faults - indeed the majority rely on a glass carafe and hotplate to keep coffee warm which can cause even freshly brewed coffee to taste stewed. The solution is a vacuum flask system, which is a revelation - coffee stays hot for up to 2 hours and won't taste stewed. Unfortunately, most retail from around £60 upwards, so this model is a sure bargain. It is very easy to clean, makes as good a cup of coffee as anybody who isn't completely 'frasier' about their coffee could want. Nice bonus feature is the detachable tank, which means there's no danger of overfilling the tank. Despite being labelled an 8-cup machine, it has a large capacity, more like 10 cups, which depending on how much coffee you make can be a plus or a minus - good if you need to make a lot, not so good if you don't, because if you only use less than half the machine's capacity you may not get full extraction from the coffee grounds, due to the shortness of the brewing cycle. A 1-3 cup special lengthened brewing cycle option would have help rectify this I suppose - but special features like that usually mean the spending more. Back to the positives though! - the machine looks very attractive on the worktop; black plastic casing has been kept to a minimum and that with the stainless steel 'open' styled filter basket holder gives means the machine looks smaller than it really is, a concern if you don't have a big kitchen. On the technical side, it is only rated 950w, compared to some more expensive machines rated 1100w - however, I used to own a 1100w machine and cannot say that the difference in wattage has any impact on the coffee I've tasted from this machine. Overall, if you're after a traditional coffee maker that will bring out the best in the coffee you use and don't want to spend a fortune you really can't go wrong with this little one!
