Amazon.co.uk Review

Coldplay are on peak form in Live 2003, riding high on the phenomenal success of A Rush of Blood to the Head. This CD/DVD two-pack was filmed (on Super-16mm film) and recorded in Sydney's Horden Pavilion on July 21 and 22, 2003, during a year-long world tour and the medium-sized arena provides a fitting stage for the London-based rock quartet; not so grand as to overwhelm the music, but large enough to indicate their large and loyal following, which includes enthusiastic fans of both genders.

Especially when played in DTS 5.1 surround, this 90-minute concert is richer, thicker and (of course) louder than Coldplay's studio recordings, lending a wall-of-sound expansiveness to the band's signature sound, which draws from such diverse influences as Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Verve, U2 and their own unique sonic landscape.

"Politik" gets the gig off to a rousing start, and other impressive highlights include "Daylight", "Yellow", the as-yet-unreleased new song "Moses", and the popular hits "In My Place", "Clocks", and "The Scientist". And while the concert visuals are slick and professional (perhaps placing a bit too much emphasis on singer/frontman Chris Martin), this DVD and CD--the latter containing a truncated 70-minute version of the same performance--are best appreciated for their pristine audio quality. Culled from 400 hours of home video, the 40-minute "concert diary" represents a wasted opportunity, enjoyable for hardcore fans but offering no insight into the band or its individual members. Much better, then, to play the concert at healthy high volume, and appreciate Coldplay in the prime of their young career. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars The best music DVD....ever, 14 Nov 2003
To me, Coldplay have never been the sort of band who ride on their live reputation in the same way that the likes of Oasis, The Darkness, Radiohead et al have done in the past. They’ve always been about what they put on record, which has always been majestic and, in most cases, spine-tinglingly brilliant. It’s because of this that I bought this DVD with a slight hint of trepidation, especially having never seen them live in the flesh. I needn’t have worried.

What you see here is a band at the peak of their powers, renewed with the sort of confidence that only playing together over a series of months can bring. While some of their songs will always work live (One I Love, Yellow, God Put a Smile on My Face, Politik) it’s the songs that should never work that really stand out. A Rush of Blood to the Head is slow and brooding on record, yet here it’s fanned out into a spiky, creepy anthem. While See You Soon is so simple and direct in its delivery, few in the audience or watching at home could fail to be moved by it.

And to top it all you get multi-angle technology on some songs, a brand new Coldplay song (Moses) to keep you going, a 40-minute documentary and a live CD album. As music DVD’s go, this is the benchmark on which all others should be measured.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coldplay come of age, 5 Dec 2003

You can't knock Coldplay can you ? They come onto the scene with one of the best debut albums in years and you expect them to disappear into the ether after a year or two. But no, they back this up with A Rush of Blood to the Head - an album that is up there with the very best in music today (or any day for that matter). But you haven't experienced Coldplay until you have watched them live and with the added extra of a Live CD, you would be foolish not to buy this special DVD pack which is terrific value for something that you will play and play and play. The piano, the guitars, the quality vocals of iconic Chris Martin, the atmosphere ...they are all captured on the DVD, and with multi-angle features you choose where you want to see it from. Buy this if you don't ever buy anything again. But don't just settle with the DVD, get the special edition - its well worth the extra couple of pounds to buy a CD that would cost £10 on its own. Right, get the DVD player on ...

5.0 out of 5 stars There getting better you know..., 8 Dec 2003
Coldplay must make other bands simple break down and cry. After the fantastic success of 'Parachutes' and argubly the best indie album since OK Computer, in Rush of Blood to the Head. It's followed by a massive world-wide tour which is captured on this very DVD.

The main feature is obviously the live gig in Sydney, where they play a 17 amazing songs including Yellow, Trouble, In My Place, Clocks, The Scientist, Politic, Don't Panic, etc. and includes the 'new' track Moses. It also shows Chris Martin weird and wonderful dancing and even the shy Jonny politly 'getting down' in the corner. Will's power behind the drums is very evident and Guy just simply looks very cool, like he could do it all day, every day.

This is what i came to expect, after seeing them live in person and on tv. But what impressed me was the notable additional features, the individual camera angle's for some songs (as seen on the screens behind them whilst playing). The 40 minute tour diary, which gives a great insight into just how Coldplay coped with the demanding schedule on their tour which includes sights and sounds from Madrid, London and America. It included some good personal thoughts from the band, along with cat rescues and geography teachers.

The Live CD is great too, with the same tracks however theres only 11 from the 17. Theres even a picture gallery on.

All in all, great, fantastic and well worth the money. It's directed brilliantly and keeps the true exitment of Coldplay's live performance.
