3.0 out of 5 stars LA BINOCHE AND RENO BOND AT PARIS AIRPORT, 13 Jan 2005
By F. Sweet (Midwestern USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Juliette Binoche ("La Binoche," in France) the gorgeous Rose and gravley voiced Jean Reno playing Felix, are two successful but unhappy travelers. They're thrown together and improbably bond during an air controller's strike in Paris. The characters are clearly defined in this French romantic comedy.

Felix, a celebrated chef and frozen foods entrepreneur and a sparkling Rose first meet at Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport. But he's too work-obsessed to really notice Rose, at first. The grizzled Reno, looking younger than his 54 years --- in spite of his hangdog eyes --- portrays Felix as a ball of hypertension and tightly pulled emotional knots. The husband-abused Rose is unhappy and fearful. Can two such dysfunctonal strangers fall in love in one day during an airline strike?

Director Daniele Thompson (and her son/co-screenwriter Christopher Thompson) search for a comfortable balance between a Hollywood homage and anti-Hollywood put down comedy. What makes the Hollywood romance stand out, other than the happy ending, is its inevitability. Seasoned pros that the two actors are, Binoche and Reno favor emotional truths above easy laughs.

What's refreshing about "JET LAG" is that it's a romantic comedy involving two lovebirds, each old enough to remember when romantic comedies were still made in black and white.

Although Binoche and Reno are very pleasant to see and hear, somehow the movie doesn't make its story very moving or exciting. That's not the actors' fault because they are virtually the best, most talented and most beautiful in France.

3.0 out of 5 stars Avanti in an airport - a slight diversion, 12 Dec 2006
By Trevor Willsmer (London, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Jetlag began life as a high-concept Hollywood romcom before becoming a French vehicle for Jean Reno and Juliette Binoche. Similarities to One Fine Day notwithstanding, this is pretty much Avanti in an airport, albeit without Wilder's wit or romanticism. Reno is the Jack Lemmon substitute, an uptight chef-turned-frozen-dinner-company-owner in a hurry to reach his ex's grandmother's funeral while Binoche takes the Juliet Mills role as the working class beautician. When their planes are constantly delayed and they find themselves sharing a hotel room... fill in the blanks. It's not particularly good and wildly over-reliant on starpower to hide the gaps in the script, but it's a watchable soaper which does have one nice scene in a hotel kitchen when Reno cooks dinner while revealing family secrets (the equivalent of the nude swim in Avanti where the two characters' barriers finally come down). Thin stuff even at the 81-minute mark (seven of which are credits), but it just about manages to fill the gap between real movies.

The transfer is acceptable but although the film was shown in theaters in 2.35:1, once the titles are over the film is presented 1.85:1.

3.0 out of 5 stars Probably better if you are going through a breakup, 18 Nov 2008
By Julie Cutler (Sheffield) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Rose (Binoche) is escaping an abusive (well...how shall I put it)...git. Felix (Reno) got dumped by the third love of his life, but he won't let go. They meet on an airport comfy lounge seat (during an air traffic controllers strike that morphs into bad weather). He offers to share his courtesy hotel room (there's bound to be twin beds). They argue over the vinaigrette. Two powerful accomplished actors don't quite mind meld or rant at each over with enough passion. It passes the time, but it doesn't quite get there for me. However maybe if you are in the middle of a break up it will tug at more heart strings than mine....
In French with English subtitles
