With this release, the Kaleidoscope/Fairfield Parlour history is fully documented. Sadly so far only one of the Kaleidoscope LPs has been re-released officially on CD. That is "Tangerine dream", while "Faintly blowing" is yet to come. So here's one more gem to look forward to. In the meantime, enjoy this well-packaged release, with excellent liner notes and illustrations. It covers the time period from 1967 until 1971, and shows how the band developed from early psychedelia to the more complex multi-instrument songs of later. All the way you will enjoy the poetry of Peter Daltrey, he is one of the few songwriters of the time who wrote texts you may read without musical accompaniment, and they still stand up on their own. (Beware he still makes solo albums of high quality.) This release includes all available BBC material by both versions of the group (same personell, but different name), and is out both on CD and double vinyl LP. Do not confuse UK Kaleidoscope with the US band of the same name, featuring David Lindley. A couple of the tracks here only survived on off-air radio recordings, but the rest has good sound quality. For collectors it is important that one song previously unreleased appears here on record for the first time, "Jump in my boat". It seems to be a rather desperate attempt from the band to break commercially, at the expense of the more complicated songs they made at the time, an preferred to promote. And there's another of the same kind, "Ballon", the single A that was omitted from the very good "Dive into yesterday" compilation. Musical highlights on "Please listen to the pictures" are "Bordeaux rose",the nearest they came to break the charts, and "Aries", a beautiful track off the Vertigo album, "From home to home". There are also 3 1971 tracks that did not appear on record until the rock opera "White faced lady" saw the light of day many years later than it was recorded. If you like high class psychedelia, this is an album you will enjoy. Kaleidoscope was in fact featured recently among the top psychedelic artists in Record Collector.

I have been a fan of Kaleidoscope ever since I bought their debut album for the princly sum of Ten Shillings (50pence)in the sixties. I have as much as available on CD and to get these fantastic BBC tapes is nothing short of being brilliant. Every song is a gem and their distinguished style is evident throughout the album. A superb album.
