Episodes 1 - 6 Planet Mongo breaks out of its orbit and is sent hurtling on a collision course with Earth. Renowned scientist Dr Zarkov builds a rocket in order to investigate the impending disaster at close quarters. He is joined on his mission by Flash Gordon and Dale Arden, who have recently survived a plane crash, and the three soon find there is more to Planet Mongo than originally thought, not least the evil ruler Emperor Ming. Based on the original Flash Gordon comic strip series, Space Soldiers was the first of the Flash Gordon series to be made and given a budget of $350,000, a then unheard-of sum. The series, however surpassed all expectations and became an unqualified success.
Synopsis
In this, the first filmed version of the popular comic strip, a distant planet has broken its orbit and is heading straight for Earth. Renowned scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov (Frank Shannon) builds an escape rocket and is joined by Yale graduate Flash Gordon (Buster Crabbe) and Dale Arden (Jean Rogers), a beautiful young woman Flash has just met. They land on the fantastic runaway planet, Mongo, only to tangle with its evil ruler, Ming the Merciless (Charles Middleton), who has dastardly plans for our three heroes. Crabbe is the quintessential Flash in this 13-episode saga which was made for a then-expensive $350,000, setting a new standard for movie serials of the 1930s. This collection includes the first six episodes.
