Descended from a conductor and vice-president of Norfolk & Western rail line, singer/songwriter Adam Selzer's history has been strongly intertwined with the company. In 1998 the company ceased to exist, the very same year Adam (born on one of their passenger trains) released his debut album and he hence named the band 'Norfolk & Western'.
Norfolk & Western has its own very different style. Recorded in a disused freight carriages in Adam's backyard, it is a soft album using a variety of instruments performed by Adam and supported, with drums, backing vocals and many other instruments besides, by former Decemberists drummer Rachel Chaiya.
You can imagine sitting in a quiet pub by the side of the old railway with the old freight trains passing by, listening to the sometimes mournful songs. From start to finish this is a brilliant album, but I have to particularly mention Terrified and Jealousy, It's True as being two of my favourites. This album is never far from the top of my CD pile and is one of the first I put on when I am (or need to be) in a more sombre mood.
Listen to a few of the examples, decide you like it and buy it! (Not necessarily in that order, but I find that way normally works the best).
