A celebration of the brothers Marx: Groucho, Chico, Harpo, Gummo and Zeppo. Using film clips and archive interviews, this is one humungous portrait of those comedy clowns of the thirties.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the Marx Brothers Movies, 22 Jan 2006
By Paul Mason "paulandcarolemason" (Surrey) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The contents are as follows:
Disc 1 "Inside the Marx brothers"
Disc 2 "You Bet Your Life" pilot
Disc 3 "Papa Romani" and "Person to Person"
Sisc 4 "The Marx Brothers: Radio Days"
Disc 5 "Marx Brothers Mixed Nuts"
The previous reviewer is right, the material offered is like having a DVD compiled from bonus extras only. The items are quite interesting if you are dedicated fan but would not be recommended as an introduction to the Brothers.
"Inside the Marx Brothers" is a pretty good documentary with many photos, interviews with family and experts, trailers and clips from tv including some shown full length in this box set.
"You Bet You Life" is a film recording of the 1949 tv pilot of Groucho's quiz show that he did on radio from 1947. It shows how good Groucho's adlibbing talent was but the picture quality is poor, obviously taken from a worn "dupey" print. It's very dated as entertainment. "Papa Romani" is a 1950 tv sitcom starring Chico. Its the kind of stereotypical humour about Italian immigrants that gives Chico no scope for craziness and its not surprising that no series resulted. "Person to Person" with Ed Murrow interviewing Groucho and family, is interesting but hard to watch due to the poor technical quality."Radio days" I have not played but is apparently audio only recordings of the Marx Brothers radio appearances from the 1930s on. "Mixed Nuts" is a compilation of movie trailers and short film appearances, some very rare. The trailers are sometimes from later reissues rather than the original release. Some clips are battered with words missing and murky picture quality but are still fascinating. Buy it for discs 1, 4 and 5.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the movies, but a decent supplement for Marx Bros. fans, 22 April 2004
By A Customer
To make it clear to everybody: These are not movies. It is about 4+ hours (not 5, as it says on the pack) of supplemental material, something you might otherwise find in the "bonus material" of a DVD edition. Alas, the actual Marx Bros. movies that have been published so far as a DVD box (one in region 2, another one only in region 1 so far) contain hardly any bonus material, and so, at extra cost, you get what's missing in those boxes. It is not high art but it could be worse. In any case, it is material that might be hard to find anywhere else, and it provides some insight into the work of the Marx Brothers – individually or as a group – beyond the movies. If you don't expect too much, this box is a great supplement – no more, no less.
What annoyed me most about the material is that most of it contains a "Marx Brothers Collection" logo in the bottom right corner. While this might be meant to deter illegal copies, more subtle methods are certainly available these days. After all, it used to be one of the advantages of watching a DVD that you don't have to deal with those annoying logos that many TV networks use to deter bootlegging.
