Ludwig Minkus isn't really lucky on disc. As one of the most productive ballet music composers of the 19th century, good recordings of his work are next to non existent. The great theatre orchestras like the Kirov-Mariinsky in St. Petersburg or the Bolshoi in Moscow, who still play this repertory regularly and know it backwards, have never released a Minkus CD � one assumes for reasons of commercial viability.

Instead we get hideosities like the CD considered. For some obscure reason the Sofia National Opera Orchestra has recorded Minkus' "Don Quixote" (a ballet from Marius Petipa dating from 1869 and still performed by theatres around the world) for the second time in less than ten years. After Boris Spassov (on Capriccio) it is now Nayden Todorov on Naxos who tries to make something of a score which in the right hands is a sunny joy from start to end. In Todorov�s hands, though, it becomes a frightfully boring listening experience. Already after a few minutes maestro Todorov finishes off the score with his slow, inane tempi and some of the most unimaginative conducting I heard in ages. Strangely enough, the non-dancing passages which represent some of Minkus� most inspired music, suffer the most, as if Todorov has no idea what he is conducting.

The liner notes for this Naxos issue are sloppily written, fail to point out the non-Minkus sections in the score (the Capriccio release at least managed to do that) and even the numbers are sometimes wrongly identified (e.g. #3 on CD2 is not a "Sailor�s Dance" but a Spanish dance, added by Anton Simon). The recording is about as pale and uninteresting as all the rest.

A very disappointing issue, adding nothing of value to the ballet music catalogue on CD.
