This 4CD set is a real bargain containing consistantly very fine performances. When these recordings were first issued at full price they were eclipsed by equally fine if not better performances by Jansons and the Oslo PO. It was a shame that these Abbado recordings were generally overlooked - now at budget price they make a superb bargain and deserve their rightful place in the classical catalogue. Abbado is a top ranking Tchaikovskian giving us a set of beautifully crafted and dramatic performances in glorious digital sound. The early Symphonies are quite exquisite making me wonder why they are hardly ever performed in the concert hall! Admittedly Symphony No.4 doesn't quite match Abbados' own performance with the VPO on DG (definitely a classic recording), but No.5 ranks with the very best and is one of my favorite versions. The final movement has a breathtaking dramatic sweep. No.6, again, is beautifully done with utmost passion.

Only one quibble - No.4 is split over discs 2 & 3, which is a shame, but I suppose that couldn't be helped. The inserted notes are rather inadequate, but at this price just go for it! Many hours of pleasure here!

The only saving grace for this set is the price. I thought the recordings a bit crude and the sound manufactured. The readings from Mr Abbado seemed erratic and inconsistent especially from the final big three symphonies. The first three being comparatively enjoyable though. There are a lot of better interpretations out there, but at a price!.. Shop around!..

The performances are fairly old, yet the sound quality is great. The symphonies are performed to the highest standard by one of the greatest orchestras of the world. My personal favourite is the fourth. This symphony is performed with much drama and is extremely enjoyable. The sixth is great too. Amazon provide this at a cheap price-so buy it.
