4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of vintage Bax, 4 Dec 2003
By Giles Allison (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
These recordings were originally issued mainly as fillers to Bryden Thomson's pioneering complete cycle of the Bax symphonies. Although the recordings were made in the mid 1980's, the Chandos sound at that time was of demonstration quality and has rarely been matched since. "Tintagel", for example, has crystal clear definition and a marvellous richness to both the brass fanfares that open the work and the ensuing gorgeous main melody. This performance of "Tintagel" remains one of my favourites (it was the first Bax I ever heard), not quite matching Barbirolli's recording for drama and intensity, but better paced than the recent Lloyd-Jones version (and even the old Boult Lyrita recording). "The Garden of Fand" does not quite recapture the magic that Beecham brought to this score, but Thomson's reading is again the most successful of CD-era recordings. The other three tone-poems are all given first-class treatment. "The Happy Forest" and "Summer Music" are early works and full of Baxian twilight, while the later "November Woods" presents a more enigmatic and sinister view of celtic landscape. An excellent companion to Handley's indespensible set of the symphonies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best ever Garden of Fand, 5 April 2009
By Fritz Wilson (leicester, england) - See all my reviews
Yet again, Bryden Thomson proves himself to have a special feeling for Bax's music. No other conductor brings out all the the colours of The Garden of Fand so well, and no other negotiates the sometimes awkward transition, around five minutes in, from grand build up to perky dance tune. The other pieces are also revelatory, with a more "objective" feeling than others find in Bax - not a bad thing for a composer that can sometimes sound effusive. The Ulster orchestra outplay their more usually celebrated rivals and bring a real feel of Bax's beloved West Coast.
