5.0 out of 5 stars DVX is the future!, 20 Nov 2003
If you've been riding the DivX MPEG-4 wave from its onset over four years ago, or whether you're new to all this movie compression mallarky; it can't be denied that digital cinema is the future - you're either with it or you're left behind (no doubt crying yourself to sleep over how your favourite films on VHS have degraded in 'quality' so badly that you can't see it for the snow anymore).

The Ellion DVX-520 truly offers all the features that anyone - not just clued-up tech-heads - would require to enjoy the best features of the MPEG movie revolution at a very reasonable price. Support for DivX (up to v5) and XVid mean that as well as keeping hold on legacy formats, cutting edge standards are compatible too. All the basics are there (VCD, SVCD, DVD+DVD-R, etc). Progressive-scan out of images means that if you are lucky enough to have a quality television (i.e. NTSC, high refresh rate) then you will enjoy superior quality video; and the digital-audio out enables 5.1 speaker surround-sound (where available) to complete the home cinema experience. My only doubt was that whether A3C audio compression was supported (with MPEG-4 - allowing 5.1 compressed audio), but my worries were ill conceived as Ellion truly has encompassed everything necessary to make not only an awesome DVD player, but also a computer-geeks home from home.

...And it's damn pretty too. Thank you Ellion and Amazon!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but....., 22 Jan 2004
By Rob (Newcastle Upon Tyne) - See all my reviews
Well, I got this DVD/DivX player and was disappointed, my particular model when playing back DVDs has a loud background hiss noise..that after checking the audio setup I have (and replacing the DVD player with a different one) was defiantely the DVD player's fault..and turning up the player's volume had no effect as the hiss increased with it. That said if you get one that doesn't hiss ellion have now released a firmware update that allows DivX zooming and fast forwarding/rewinding and is generally much better.. and it does play just about anything.. its just a shame mine hissed badly (others havent reported this problem I know of only myself and 2 others who have). You can also multi-region the player through a remote code (which you will have to do once the firmware is updated). I'd reccomend it, but if it hisses too much for you send it back.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Its Plays everything !!, 21 Nov 2003
Rite i got my ellion dvd player yesterday took it out of the box and linked it to my tv. No without even looking at the manual i was able to play movies from different regions and divx films with its intuitive interface. I love it :) Hoever the first thing that got me was the volume of the films until i realised that the dvd player had its own built in volume control! I haven't seen the prgrssive scan in action yet as i couldn't fathom out what i need to be doing !!! But these 2 factors aside its a well priced dvd player that looks good and performs well!!
