3.0 out of 5 stars Once in a Lifetime Opportunity Missed?, 12 Dec 2003
By Kim Gilchrist (LONDON United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
If any band deserves a comprehensive, Anthology-style box-set it's cerainly Talking Heads. Few bands can be said to have pushed themseves to such invention whilst staying true to their own vision and passion for music. Their rapid development from twitchy new wave art-pop to dark, exhilerating funk and onwards into glorious and intelligent 80's pop is documented faithfully here, but could more have been done? Almost entire albums are lifted here to fill the 3 CD's, but there is still a feeling of something missing. Is it possible to represent a band this eclectic faithfully through a collection? There are far too few rarities and outtakes to make this an essential purchase for hardcore fans, whilst anybody wanting an introduction to the band is unlikey to begin with an expensive and bizarrely packaged collection like this. The case is the approximate length of the CD's when they're placed in a row, which makes handling the thing and reading the sleevenotes fiddly and irritating. Worse still, several of the rare tracks included on 1992's collection 'Sand in the Vaseline' are not included here, meaning that this collection cannot even call itself definitive. I'm only complaining so bitterly because it seems that an opportunity to open the lid on an incredible, underexposed and life-alteringly brilliant group has been thrown away. Every track here is unique, thrilling and essential. The question is (and Talking Heads are a band who loved to ask questions): how should a box-set best represent them? Not like this. Most of their albums are available on mid-price these days. Buy them all. Buy them in the order they were released; buy them in alphabetical order; buy them depending on how you like the covers, or buy one every time you hear a song on the radio that leaves you cold. This, however, is not the 'Best of Talking Heads' and neither is it the 'Talking Heads Anthology'. The first choice would be 10 or 11 CD's long(really!), the second is a challenge that has not been taken, which is a crying shame.

1.0 out of 5 stars a missed opportunity, 3 May 2004
i feel awkward rating this so low but you don't need to buy this unless (like me) you are a Talking Heads completist. If you do you will curse yourself for spending so much money on the bizarre packaging and then will realise that with a decent stereo (and the originals) you could shuffle the same combination of tracks for free. The accompanying notes offer nothing said before.

A life-changing, uplifting and innovative band such as this deserves better than this glossed-up money-making exercise. There must be so many rareties and un-released versions of tracks they could have put out, instead of this. If these are subsequently released then it makes it even worse.

I believe a set of re-mastered originals are the in the offing. Save your money for those - I should have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection, 23 Nov 2003
A fantastic compilation of 3 cds and 1 DVD by the best most creative band in the world. The first CD contains tracks from their quirky early "77" and "More Songs" period, then the middle CD showcases remastered versions from their genius albums of "Fear of Music" and "Remain in Light" with a great alternate version of "Cities"

The last music CD sees them come full circle back to their quirky 4 piece band on "Little Creatures" and "True Stories" with the wonderful finale of the big band African/French influenced "Naked"

The DVD includes some great promotional videos and is a great companion to the legendary "Stop Making Sense" DVD.

If you think you have heard Talking Heads because of "Once in a Lifetime", "Road to Nowhere" or "Burning Down the House" you really need to buy this boxset to appreciate the breadth of styles Talking Heads experimented with

I'd give it ten stars if I could!
