Peter, Paul and Mary weren't the first folk group to scale the music charts in the early 1960s, but they were the most commercially successful. Carry It On is a four-CD (plus one DVD) box set that gathers all of their hits, along with generous helpings of rarities, B-sides and previously unreleased songs. Although they had a magical vocal sound, a camera-ready image and strong songwriting chops of their own, perhaps the trio's greatest strength was their ability to recognise outstanding songs from then-unknown composers. They were the first major group to cover songs by Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Laura Nyro, John Denver and Tom Paxton, which helped introduce the work of these songwriters to a wider audience. Most Helpful Customer Reviews   7 of 7 people found the following review helpful: Classic PPM, 12 May 2004 By  K Richardson (Leeds, Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews From being aware that CARRY IT ON was being released earlier this year,I had waited with great excitement to receive it.It arrived yesterday and I could'nt wait to open it.The first thing that struck me was the beautiful way it was presented.Released in a book format with plenty of photo's and stories it made wonderful reading.The music itself is superb, classic Peter ,Paul& Mary.The contents on the 4 cd's is varied and spans the whole range of their music.The chance to hear a lot of their songs again was like being in paradise.Most of my PPM collection is on vinyl so now I can listen to them in the car.The way PPM sing together in such beautiful clear rich tones,perfectly harmonized is a moving experience.I first heard PPM in the 60's and was hooked on them then, unfortunately I was never able to see them live which is a big regret.The bonus DVD is a real treat for me, to see them perform some of their songs is classic.This DVD is the icing on the cake for me,add this to the cd's and it makes a excellent gift or treat for yourself.In terms of value for money it is a real bargain.Anyone who has not experienced Peter,Paul & Mary before and who like folk music should snap up CARRY IT ON, they won't regret it.  Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you? My first surprise was the wonderful presentation box with lots of pictures and stories inside,what a treat.I soon started listening to the cd's and it soon took me back to the 60's when I first heard PPM. What wonderful voices and harmonies,I thought I was in paradise.The cd's comprise of truly wonderful classics and the bonus DVD features them singing songs and 1 delightful version of Leaving On A Jet Plane accomplanied by the late John Denver.This DVD is fantastic for me as I never saw them live and have very little footage of them singing.All in all a really great value for money product.All you PPM fans who like me have the songs mainly on vinyl enjoy them now anywhere on cd.  Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you?
