ALl The Way From Oslo, 24 Oct 2003
Recorded at the Sentrum Scene, Oslo, January 29th and 30th 2002, Strings Attached finally sees the light of day. If I had to sum it up in a word? Stunning. Universal have given this DVD the full treatment and it has really paid off- the long wait was well worth it. From the opening track Rest In Peace to the closing Saturday Gigs, the whole production puts this DVD in a class of it's own. Make sure you watch it on a 5.1 surround system so as to get the full benefit of Ian, the band and the Trondheim Soloists. Watching in just PCM stereo just isn't the same. For those that did not attend the concerts, each song gets a very different treatment, with the orchestra adding a new dimension. Even All The Way From Memphis gets a special arrangement that adds to such a great song. A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square was a very unusual choice for Ian, but it was his mum's favourite song, and it's such a joy to watch. I was disappointed that Don't Let Go was not included on the DVD but it will be on the CD along with Roll Away The Stone. 23a Swan Hill gets the full string treatment with the Soloists enjoying every moment. It's fun trying to guess the intro to the songs as most are orchestra led, some are not so obvious. Good use of audience shots and we see Pete and Dave from Liverpool, Sven, Justin, Daniel and girfriend from Argentina amonst others. Two new songs are included, Twisted Steel about 9/11 which captures the mood of the event perfectly despite being a rocker, whilst Rollerball is about the corporate music scene today. The bonus material includes a long interview with Ian, behind the scenes footage and interviews with fans, Tracie, Jesse etc. Also, discography and biography. Watching it brings back some great memories of a cold, snowy Oslo. It's great to have a concert of Ian with such good quality at last. Universal have done a fantastic job; let's hope they promote it fully.

Strong songs, delicate performance, 31 Oct 2003
Allo, allo, allo! This live show proves how good, strong songs all the way from early seventies only get better with time and many newer songs are turning out to be classics as well. I've seen Ian Hunter a couple of times with Mick Ronson live on stage, but this show adds a refreshing dimension to a normal rock concert. The guitars and drums are still there, but it is really the strings that add that nice touch to many songs. 23A Swan Hill should be a hit, and the introduction to the song is great, too. For the fans (like Joe Elliot of Def Leppard, it seems), the selection of songs is interesting: many tunes that even a hard core fan probably hasn't heard live before. For those who are not familiar with Ian Hunter's long career, there are some popular songs that you might have heard performed by other artists, such as Barry Manilow and Great White(! an indication of the potential of Ian's songs, I believe). Someone asked Ian on his web site www.ianhunter.com, does he consider himself as a composer, a singer, or a writer. Get this DVD and find out for yourself, before checking out what the man answered!

Very different, 7 Nov 2003
For those that know Ian Hunter, you'll know the songs but not know them like this. It takes some getting used to - hearing the songs you know and love in such a different form - but second time round, then the third, it just gets better and better. Anyone that hasn't heard Ian for a while will certainly get some surprises. Even the earlier Mott songs sound like new. The string arrangements suit the ballads particularly well.It was worth the wait in the cold in Oslo - and it was worth the 18 month wait for the DVD. By it - sit back - and find out just why Hunter is one of the best songwriters around.
