Released a few years after "Red Headed Stranger", this is another Willie Nelson concept album, which was 'lost' to some degree, probably due to its' similarity in theme to "Stranger".

This time it seems (to my ears at least) to tell the story of a gunfighter who guns down an innocent man and then grieves so much for his action that he dies and is reborn ("Tougher than Leather" - a great story song, and "Little Old Fashioned Karma", a terrific track with lots of solos). He is subsequently wrongly accused of a crime and gets sent to jail. Linking all this is the Rose, the symbol of love given by the girlfriend of the first gunned down cowboy and then to 'Leather' when he dies. It then reappears when the re-incarnated 'Leather' is in prison. Confused? Forget the story, just enjoy the music!

Comes with one bonus track, a demo of "Summer Of Roses/December Day" - nice enough in itself but nothing to get excited about.

I don't think it'll ever be accepted as a classic as much as "Red Headed Stranger" but it's certainly got some great music on it and is a vital addition to any Willie Nelson fan's collection.
