DVD Description

An adaptation of Thomas Middleton’s celebrated play from 1607, Revengers Tragedy tells the story of a man whose wife is murdered on their wedding day and his desire to exact revenge on the murderer. In a post-apocalyptic Liverpool of the future, Christopher Eccleston (Elizabeth, 28 Days Later) returns from a self-imposed exile to bring down those responsible for his wife’s murder. While Vindici’s family have fallen on hard times, the murderer – known as The Duke (Derek Jacobi - Gosford Park) – has become rich, powerful and virtually untouchable. Employing all his wit and cunning, Vindici sets out to gain the Duke’s confidence and get close enough to kill him.

Vibrant and pulsating with colour and style, Revengers Tragedy is a masterpiece of reinvention set to astound and astonish.

4.0 out of 5 stars Revenge Tragedy and Jacobean Drama, 15 Oct 2003
By Michelle Monahan (Devon United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Anyone who is studying or merely interested in Jacobean tragedy should see this movie. Christopher Eccleston's emotive performance really puts meaning to the essence of revenge tragedy. This film has echoes of Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet, fast and modern, it does for Middleton what Baz did for Shakespeare. A play brought to life. A definate must!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dazzling, 13 Mar 2004
By A Customer
There's more offbeat brilliance in a scene of this film than in an average year of Hollywood pap. Alex Cox (if you haven't heard of him, you're missing a lot) directs a splendidly anarchic adaptation of Middleton's play; it's perfectly cast, directed with deft wackiness, and altogether a must-see. One of the best films of the last few years.

This is beneath contempt. Don't buy it, give the money to someone and ask them to poke you in the eye, you'll have more fun.
