5.0 out of 5 stars Benchmark recording, 28 Sep 2004
By Bernd Zoellner "bzoe" (Berlin) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Now available on SACD, this benchmark recording of Rachmaninov's two best-loved piano concertos can be heard in all its splendour for the first time. The CDs of the Mercury Living Presence were notable for their transparency, but also for their rather strident sonorities. By contrast, this three-channel SACD offers warm, mellow sound that seems to fill the whole room. Rachmaninov's lush textures pose no problem for the new format. The soloist, Byron Janis, enjoyed tremendous popularity in the 1960s as the first Western pianist to breach the Iron Curtain and perform in Moscow. Unfortunately, his career was cut short by arthritis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superior recording and performance, 3 Nov 2004
By Eng PAULO JORGE M NUNES "Paulo Mateus Nunes" (Lisbon, Portugal) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had already the Lang Lang Rachmaninov piano concert. But, although it seemed technicaly good performance I've always thought it was missing something.

Then I bought this record... And I've confirmed my "suspicions". These one has a soul in it's performace and you just enter another dimension when listening to it.

Even if you have other performances of these concertos buy this one. You won't regret it.
