4.0 out of 5 stars Versatility & Diversity Characterises the Late Night Series, 19 Nov 2003
People shouldn't get confused. This is not a Jamiroquai personal album and many Jamiroquai fans may think this because they haven't come across the LateNightTales series before. Rather, it is a compilation of tracks that inspired Jay Kay. Having said that, the Late Night series is a landmark series that presents the artist's inspirations and musical preferences. Other Late Night releases are more downtempo than this latest instalment, because this series is primarily targeted for the late-night post-club chilling. Only Tommy Guerrero's and Sly & Robbie's Late Night instalments are more up-tempo and very funky.

Here Jamiroquai clearly demonstrates that he prefers a lighter more vocal-oriented funk as is evident from his comments in the sleevenotes. The mixing is minimal to non-existent but for a compilation of this type, it does not spoil the listening experience. Stand-out tracks are "Girl I think the world about you", the amazing "Stay free", "Pretty baby", the re-make of "California dreaming", which was also included in Rae & Christian's Late Night, and of course the famous "Theme from Enter The Dragon".

Personally, I prefer the previous more downtempo releases that blend many different musical styles (jazz/funk/hip-hop/trip-hop/chill-out electronica/etc), such as Rae & Christian's and Nightmares On Wax's Late Night mixes, which are truly outstanding and ought to be checked out by people that haven't yet discovered the magic of this compilation series. If you enjoyed Jay Kay's Late Night addition, then you may like Tommy Guerrero's funky journey.

4.0 out of 5 stars A new direction for Late Night Tales????, 13 Nov 2003

Already owning the whole of the Another Late Night/Late Night Tales series I have been awaiting this next instalment with great anticipation. And while the album is not a disappointment - far from it - it doesnt seem to sit alongside previous selections.

The tracks on the CD are an excellent insight into Jamiroquais musical inspirations and a must if you like Soul, Funk and Disco. Jay Kay really does produce some funky music and his selections on this CD confirm where his ideas came from.

What I like about the Late Night Tales series is that the music selection is usually diverse and eclectic and provides a musical journey. This CD just sticks to the one genre and in that sense doesnt give me the same lift as the other CDs in the series did.

Having said that this is still a top notch album worthy of anyones CD collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Late Night Tales Sure Shot, 16 Nov 2003
By Big Ron (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
All I can say is.....the Late Night Tales series gets hotter by the minute. Having already been hooked on the Nightmare on Wax edition, (mixing the old and Nu-Skool)......Jay Kay has lent his funky flavourful hand by picking these ripe tracks o'soul. I am very impressed with Jay Kay's pick, being a hardcore Jamiroquai and all round funk and soul junky. I am especially impressed, that despite my wide range of funk compilations and albums, that I don't have a single track on this album. This is what makes Late Night Tales so great. The quality of this compilation is excellent. Jay Kay has given an insight into his inspirations and while taking us on this journey has introduced us to tracks like 'Stay Free' (with a flute touch funkier than a gibbon smoking cola cubes) and 'I'll Never Forget' (more funk than an orangutans trainers) and the superbly mellow and feel good flava of 'Rainin' Through My Sunshine.'
Those tracks are the highlights, ie they are excellent, the rest are simply amazing (like 'Here's To You'). Don't delay, free the funk and buy this to expand your funky collection!!!!
