GoLive CS can handle all the key design elements of even quite complex sites, including facilities for many kinds of media and elements, such as tables and forms. It maintains and publishes the content you give it, as HTML or Adobe's own PDF-format documents.
You can view the structure of your website in several different ways, from a diagram of the information held within it, to an organisation chart, through the pages themselves and finally to the HTML code that lies behind them. Each of these views is maintained in separate windows and, like the many palettes offered by the program, can be customised to your particular style of working.
Adobe has extended GoLive's support for Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), a facility for building standard style elements to help formalise the look of a website. Combine this with the program's facilities for coauthorship and you can have a site maintained by a team of Web designers and content managers, while still maintaining a consistent look and feel.
Adobe makes much of the program's integration with the other applications in its Creative Suite. So, for instance, you can directly import graphics from Photoshop and Illustrator and the program automatically converts layer information to GoLive's own Smart Objects, for positioning on a Web page. Complex graphics can be automatically re-rendered on import, to a resolution suitable for screen viewing.
If you like to mix and match the way you design your Web sites, working with a DTP style interface to put the basic components into place and then tweaking the final look by hand-coding HTML, GoLive provides all the tools you need. You can, if you want, keep the source window open at the same time as editing. This way, you can see the automatic update of your source code as you add or change elements on the screen.
Although the initial learning curve for GoLive CS may be steep, with a lot of different views and palettes to get to grips with, once you've made the effort, the program is powerful and capable of building and maintaining sophisticated sites entirely on its own. --Simon Williams
