Product Description

CD Description

Rachel's is a group that defies easy categorisation. Variously described as neo-classical, experimental, post-rock, or a chamber ensemble for the indie-rock set, the enigmatic collective specialises in music that blurs the boundaries that usually define genres. They are dedicated to the explorationof ideas and renowned for their independent-minded work with filmmakers, photographers, choreographers, and visual artists.
SYSTEMS/LAYERS was developed by the group in collaboration with the SITI Company for a theatre piece of the samename and is based on improvisations and conceptual conversations. Recorded over a two-year period, the album includes material performed live with members of the company, along with field recordings contributed by friends and fans. The result is a fascinating concept piece that takes the listener on a dreamlike journey through an aural landscape whose starkness is intermittently relieved by patches of richly woven textures. Taken as a whole, the album has a discernible pulse, a steady ebb and flow. Mournful melodies played by one or two instruments slowly and gradually morph into throbbing rhythmic interludes and thickly layered crescendos. SYSTEMS/LAYERS can be enjoyed simply for its atmospheric ambience, butunder closer scrutiny, it yields numerous rewards for the adventurous and open-minded listener.

4.0 out of 5 stars Let it hypnotize you, 2 Dec 2003
By lmattozz (Venice, Italy) - See all my reviews
Systems/Layers is the band's fifth album, and it's a brilliant ambient musical experience.
You can tune it out if you choose and it'll still enhance your surroundings, or you can engage yourself fully and allow it to positively hypnotize you.
Though virtually all of Systems/Layers possesses Rachel's characteristic modern chamber ensemble sound, there are dozens of field recordings and sampled voices that seep in around the edges, mostly drawn from source material sent to the band by friends and fans, and they serve to heighten the immediacy of the music and increase its sense of place.
Virtually every song here conjures urban streets and dwellings, but each does so with a different set of sources: "Wouldn't Live Anywhere Else" takes the more obvious route, melding samples of ice cream trucks, children playing, people mumbling, birds, and sirens with the sparsest of drones, while "Esperanza", a gorgeous, entirely organic chamber piece, manages the same with strings and woodwinds.
