Synopsis

A taut, psychological thriller, written by Nikolaj Frobenius (best known for writing INSOMNIA), in which a couple, Eddie and Maria, are living a happy and secluded life in the country. Their seclusion is upset by the arrival of Kullman, a friend of Eddie. Eddie and Kullman had once been criminals, an activity which led to Kullman going to jail. To Maria's growing concern, Kullman shows no sign of leaving and seems to be moving in permanently. Slowly, Kullmans' real reasons for coming to stay are revealed and a dangerous game of cat and mouse ensues.

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing, 26 Feb 2004

Face from the past threatens to drag protagonists back to a life they’d rather forget. Forget tension and suspense, stereotype the characters and make them behave obviously to a script we’ve seen many times before. Add a landscape so bleak and depressing, you’d think they’d welcome the diversion of a nutter in their midst. Some things, Hollywood does best!

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, 16 April 2006

One of the most successful Norwegian films of recent years, Dragonflies portrays a couple, Eddie and Maria, whose idyllic rural life is thrown into turmoil when an old friend from Eddie's (criminal) past turns up. Though based on a short story by Ingvar Ambjørnsen, the film involved a great deal of improvisation on the part of both the director and the actors. The film is moving and engaging, with a wonderful dark tension running through it and superb performances from all three leads. Definitely worth seeing.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Star is Born, 18 Feb 2006
By Marc Adams (Dublin , Ireland) - See all my reviews
i briefly glanced at the t.v magazine looking to see if there was any decent late night movies on the box. I came across dragonflies not knowing it was norwegian. I was only planning to half watch it, playing my psp in the process. Well lets just say my psp was lying deserted on the floor when i set my eyes upon Marie Bonnevie. I slowly became intrigued by the interesting plot with the will she, won t she scenario. Basically its about a pregnant women living a cosy ideal life with her husband in a remote norwegian region until the husbands former partner in crime shows up and becomes increasingly interest in her. The plot is well developed with a stunning performance from Marie bonnevie. At first i was a bit sceptical at about how a beautiful women like her could end up with her fat bearded husband in the movie but their characters are so well developed throughout the movie and theres a strange sort of chemistry between Marie and Kim Bodnia who is also suberb. In my opinion this is a must see movie for people who don t mind a slow moving movie and have an appreciation for beautiful women but may not please people looking for more action packed fast paced movie. After everything i said in this review theres only one thing left i have to say: Marie will you marry me?
