4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - Despite the Missing Overture, 30 Dec 2003
By A Customer
I saw the show in London with the same cast and spent a wonderful evening. It was directed by Michael Blakemore (who, at the 2000 Tony Awards not only got an award for this show, but also for his work on the play 'Copenhagen') and packs a wonderful punch. Rachel York not only looks stunning, she sings and acts excellently as well (Sondheim fanatics may know her from the original cast recording of 'Putting It Together' - also very recommendable) and together with Brent Barrett she forms a superb team. Barrett sings very well and is a wonderful and virile Fred. The rest of the cast are on the same level.
What is, however, galling (and what accounts for one star being subtracted from the maximum five) is the absence of the overture - obviously modern audiences cannot be expected to sit quietly for seven minutes; so the show starts with 'Another op'nin, Another show'.
This DVD is a winner. Buy it if you want to spend a blissful couple of hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing stage performance, 3 Jan 2004
This, for me, is the best version of any stage musical I have ever seen on DVD. Looking through the whole catalogue of musicals, most are screen versions, with their overlay of lush orchestrations and hollywood razz-ma-tazz. But this is the real thing. It is suffused with the spirit of the theatre. Acting is big and telegraphed for a large live audience, but because it is a stage performance (of a Shakespeare Play within a Play), this is perfectly natural. The vocal performances are highly characterized, with the words and meanings given careful pointing, so that a fun song (like Wunderbar) can be uplifting, humorous and poignant in turn. I have myself conducted this musical, in a highly creditable amateur performance, and I followed the DVD through with my own score in which I have pasted the libretto. I delighted in the constant subtleties of delivery. The songs are faithfully presented in the usual sequence with one additional number, with rewritten underscore between the songs The orchestrations are magnificent with refreshing new versions of the dance numbers. The overture and entracte are replaced by attractive new stagings. The band is terrific with its balance of saxophones, brass and small string section so characteristic of a pit orchestra. The libretto is wittily updated and beautifully delivered. And shining throughout the whole production is the original combination of music and lyrics by Cole Porter in one of the greatest musicals of all time. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant theatre, 4 Aug 2007
By Z. Woodcock (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I went to see this live in the West End and I loved it! I was waiting for it to tour but it didn't come near me, so I was so pleased when the BBC showed it at Christmas. I taped it, and it's wearing out now, so I've got the DVD, and I have to say I love it love it love it!!

The acting is brilliant, the songs are funny, naughty and catchy, the costumes are vibrant. Yes, the camera angles do take a little something from the theatre atmosphere, but the fact that this was filmed from a theatre might encourage more people to go and see things live.

This has always been one of my fave musicals (next to 7 Brides) and I like the stage version much more than the Howard Keel film. The whole thing is a delight for young and old alike. Buy this DVD or go see it on the stage - you won't regret it!
