Here is yet another extraordinary disc by Musica Antiqua Köln. Their latest cd of french music Le Roi Danse was, to say the least, provoking for my many people. With it's slow tempi and massive sound it was quite a step away from most recordings of this repertoire. Though, it is of course the same reaction as always when someone does something new for the first time. Personally, I think it's marvellous. The broad and almost symphonic sound of MAK is a fresh contrast to the rest of the industry. Reinhard Goebel is a strong character that refuses to follow anyone else and goes his own way. This new cd with the music of Charpentier will probably have the same effect as Le Roi Danse did. Everything is very slow-moving and there is an almost constant legato through out the cd. This does not make one feel bored though because the phrasing is so strong and convincing. In some way it feels really powerful and gives a strong feeling of meaning to the music. As always, there is nothing negative to say about the technical brilliance of MAK. One could question the change of crew. Former members such as Florian Deuter(vn), Markus Möllenbeck(vlc) and Christian Rieger(hpd) was in my opinion superior to Andreas Schardt, Klaus-Dieter Brandt and Léon Berben. The sound of the solo section is thinner than before and in general less convincing. There is a newly formed ensemble with Florian Deuter: L'Harmonie Universelle. They seem pretty promising and will probably help carrying on the tradition created by Mr Goebel. Anyway this cd is great. Inspiring performances and fascinating music. Go get it!

I bought this after reading the review that compares it to "Le Roi Danse" as this is one of my favourite albums of all time. I don't feel that the match is even close. Many tracks on this album are melancholic and slower compared to the cheerfulness of the Le Roi Danse album. The trumpet concert pieces (which I were looking most forward to) are not richer in harmony or has slower tempo than other recordings of the same pieces I've heard. On a note I can say that the difference in tempo in Lully's Te Deum on "Le Roi Danse" is significantly slower than other recordings.
If you like french baroque from the time of the Sun King and the "Le Roi Danse" album I would recommend Lalande: "Music for The Sun King", which is an amazing album.

Nevertheless this album is well performed and interesting. Most of the tracks are instrumental only, which is seldom seen for Charpentier recordings.
