I'd not really heard any Honegger other than the tone-poem "Pacific 231", but was very impressed by a Honegger symphony on "Classic FM" of all unlikely places so sought out some more on CD. This complete set of symphonies was very reasonably priced so I gave it a go. If, like me, you were not familiar with these works, "a bit like Shostokovitch" might give you an inkling, though there's a lot more to it that that. What does stand out for me is the superb musicianship of the Toulouse Orchestra, a band I'd not hear before, nor even hear of it must be admitted. I don't know the music, so can't comment on the other reviewer's "missing trumpet" observation, but I must say that the playing on these records brings out the real magic and excitement which is the reason for listening to any music. They certainly sound as if they're enjoying themselves and believe in this music. I've listened to these symphonies a good few times in the weeks since I've bought them and find more there each time, so am very pleased to have discovered Honegger's music. I shall also be looking out for other recordings by Toulouse orchestra and / or Monsieur Plasson. Recording quality is good, and for a fiver, it's fantastic value as well. OK, Honegger isn't perhaps in the very first rank, but this is very good music all the same, the playing is outstanding and at this price it's a steal.

Symphony 2 has a celebrated section in its final movement,which gives prominence to the solo trumpet.
In this recording there does not appear to be a trumpet at all!
