Synopsis

Three classic films of Powell and Pressburger--purveyors of quality drama.
A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH: With his crew either dead or parachuted out, his craft in flames and falling fast, RAF bomber pilot Peter Carter bails out without a chute. His miraculous survival allows him to pursue a fortuitous romance with the radio operator with whom he shared what he thought were his last words. But agents in Heaven discover that a mistake was made -- and a celestial trial threatens to revoke Carter's new lease on life.
THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP: An old, befuddled British military officer, Colonel Blimp, reminisces about his past glories in this witty war satire. Deborah Kerr plays three different women in the Colonel's long, but not particularly well-spent life.
I KNOW WHERE I'M GOING: Romantic comedy about a girl who plans to marry for money and finds her ideas challenged when she is stranded on a remote Scottish island where she becomes enamoured by a penniless sailor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent, 23 Jan 2004
A perfect introduction to the work of this great pair at a bargain price. No extras, but that isn't the point - the movies speak for themselves, and don't need 'behind the scenes', 'making of' or 'how we did the sfx' promo features.

No need to think twice about it - just buy, watch and enjoy over and over.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent value, 19 Feb 2004

excellent value. i bought this to write an essay about powell and pressburger and found the mixture excellent to write about.

it is not true that there are no extras (as claimed in a previous comment). 'there are a few on colonel blimp' and on 'a matter of life an death'.

all three films are well worth watching and i enjoyed them greatly, even though i had to watch them several times for my research.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating movie!, 23 Sep 2008
By FAMOUS NAME (UNITED KINGDOM) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)

PLEASE NOTE: THIS REVIEW IF FOR 'A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH' ONLY:

This film has a fabulous opening sequence, and a lovely opening scene featuring David Niven as 'Peter Carter' and Kim Hunter as 'June'.

This is a fascinating movie with an interesting topic, and as so many have said before; this is a film way ahead of its time. The fact that this was filmed using both black and white and colour adds to the 'Special Effects'.

'Peter Carter' gets a second chance at life and love when he has to jump from a crashing Aeroplane during the War.

Marius Goring stars in one of his most 'colourful' roles as the 'Conductor 71' character. Also stars Raymond Massey.

An entertaining movie.
