Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Although 80s campus faves 10,000 Maniacs remain an ongoing if depleted concern to this day, the double-CD retrospective Campfire Songs (disc one offers a "Best Of"-style resume to break in new recruits, the second disc lures the converted with rare outtakes, demos and sundry surplus recordings) rightly concludes with the departure of gorgeously matriarchal poetess Natalie Merchant for a solo career in 1994. Disc one's judicious selection begs little quarrel, focusing on the watershed folk-pop albums "In My Tribe" (where Merchant effloresced into a vocalist of considerable charm, addressing domestic social issues on "Don't Talk" and "What's The Matter Here?" with a tender and entirely plausible compunction) and the brooding adieu of "Our Time in Eden" but also allocates space to earlier, angular indie fare ( "My Mother the War", "Planned Obsolescence") dating from an era when 10,000 Maniacs enjoyed an almost sororal relationship with REM. Aside from the obvious pleasure of some hitherto unreleased Eden demos, the bonus disc is either respectable (a duet with Michael Stipe on a live version of Lulu's "To Sir with Love", the Nanci Griffith territory of "Let the Mystery Be") or ridiculous (a reggae version of Bowie's "Starman") but disc one serves as an indispensable reminder of 10,000 Maniacs' wistful literacy. --Kevin Maidment

5.0 out of 5 stars From the first, to the last., 26 Feb 2004

(REAL NAME)
Campfire songs is a compilation spanning 10,000 Maniacs fabulous career, from the early days of 1982 up until when Natalie Merchant left the band in 1993 to become a successful solo artist.
In this two CD set, the first disc contains the most popular recordings, although the first four tracks are ones I hadn't heard before, being from the bands slightly wilder early days!
As with any 'best of' compilation, it's hard to narrow it down to one CD's worth - and especially for the Maniacs, as almost all their tracks could have qualified, so inevitably there will be some left out, but this collection spans a great selection covering early work from their little known 'human conflict number five' album, right up to their mtv unplugged cover version (and I think better than the original) of 'Because the night' and including classics like 'Poison in the well' & 'These are Days.'

Disc two is made up of the more obscure and unknown recordings as well as some demo and alternative lyric versions of songs.
I actually ended up liking this disc even more than the first, its like having a brand new Maniacs album, especially tracks such as 'To sir with love' featuring R.E.M's Michael Stipe, 'Let the mystery be' and a great reggae version of David Bowies 'Starman.' In-fact all the tracks on this CD are brilliant!

A quick note has to go to the CD case - not the usual unimaginative plastic tray and book but a thoughtfully designed card case almost like a record cover with an interesting booklet containing a biography, artwork and stories and pictures from the bands career.
All in all a must have album, essential for rounding off, or even starting your 10,000 Maniacs collection!
