Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The most surprising thing about Fleshwounds, the debut solo album from former Skunk Anansie vocalist Skin, is that it took so long to arrive in the first place. Skunk Anansie rose to prominence in the mid-1990s, exponents of an impassioned agitprop punk-metal vision that cast righteous stones at targets like racism and religious fundamentalism. Yet the demands of the marketplace gradually saw their forthright political edge sidelined in favour of a spell of chart-friendly soft-rock torch songs that marked out the soulful Skin as the band's strongest link.

Sensibly, Fleshwounds plays to this strength: producer David Kosten--who's previously recorded as electro-classical composer Faultline--keeps the mood sparse and chilly, faintly recalling some of the icy textures of Bjork's Homogenic on the likes of "Faithfulness" and "You've Made Your Bed", or unleashing clinical grunge guitar on "Listen to Yourself". There are some sure-fire mainstream hits tucked away here, though, most obviously "Lost"--a lighters-out piano ballad penned with Robbie Williams' ex-songwriting partner Guy Chambers, which revolves around a lyric that skilfully captures Skin's very individual synthesis of vulnerability and emotional strength. --Louis Pattison

5.0 out of 5 stars Skin adds a little extra spice, 15 Sep 2003
By A Customer
Fleshwounds was initially released in June of this year. However, this re-release takes the stunning Fleshwounds and makes it even better. The differences between this new version and the old one are few but significant. Gone is the perhaps a little melodramatic 'As Long As That's True', and in its place, the astonishingly good cover of Electronic's 'Getting Away With It'. There is also the bonus track, the radio mix of 'Faithfulness', which features on the single released on 8th May.

Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing Skin live would know that to say the act is energetic would be a terrible understatement. The changes to Fleshwounds seem to have better captured that vibrant energy that Skin is all about. Whilst there remains the mellow, beautiful, lyrically ingenious songs such as 'Don't Let Me Down' and 'You've Made Your Bed', the addition of 'Getting Away With It' and the 'Faithfulness' radio mix add to the already lengthy list of rock songs, which includes 'Listen To Yourself', 'Trashed' and 'I'll Try'.

If you bought the original Fleshwounds, your by now probably such a fan of Skin you will buy this anyway. If you have yet to buy an album by this brilliant singer/songwriter, buy this version: the first Fleshwounds was good, this is better!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album, full of emotion., 21 Nov 2005
By Steven Burns (Middlesbrough, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Skunk Anansie have always been an amazing band. I always thought that they needed each other to produce great music, but Skin hasn't failed to impress with her debut "Fleshwounds".

I was a little sceptical at first, because the sound was nothing like a Skunk Anansie CD. Once you get used to the fact that it isn't an album of Skunk Anansie 'funk-punk-rock', you begin to love it.

Every track on this album has something special about it. Skin's voice just adds that "umph" to the simple, yet attractive music.

Her four singles from the album are stand out tracks, and you can see why they were released as singles. These being "Faithfulness", "Trashed", "Lost" and "Getting Away With It".

Other stand out tracks, personally, include "Listen To Yourself" and "Burnt Like You". "Listen To Yourself" resembles Skunk Anansie's 'Post Orgasmic Chill' era. The song reminds me of "Lately"; a song which you can move your body side-to-side to whilst sitting in your chair. "Burnt Like You" has almost no music accompanying Skin's amazing voice, which makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.

The album seems to flow perfectly. The origianl release, however, had an overall better flow. This release has the added track "Getting Away With It" in the middle on the trasklist. This song is the most rock-type track on the album. It is, however, an amazing song, and doesn't distract from the overall feel.

The album seemingly gave Skin a new direction in music. A criticism I can give is that it may sound over-produced in places if you compare it to Skunk Anansie's work (Skunk Anansie were always "rough and ready", sounding raw). Perhaps this is where Skin wanted to take the album? A different direction from her previous years as "a black rock chick with a bald head".

Nontheless, it's am anazing album, full of emotion, intriguing lyrics and beautiful music. 5 out of 5!

5.0 out of 5 stars From the heart of Skin, 1 Jul 2005
This album is amazing. The depth of the lyrics and the passion of Skin's voice is mesmerising. This is straight from the heart, honest and beautiful.

I was not a Skunk Anansie fan, a bit too full on rock for me. This is a completely different Skin. She uses that phenomenal, instantly indentifiable voice to create some of the most soul piercing ballads I've ever heard.

This is Skin as you've never heard her before. Prepare to be surprised.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rather disappointing.
Skin's voice is applauded for its range, emotion and pure energy. Forming the bedrock of former band Skunk Anansie, it was her vocals that attracted me to the four-piece. Read more
