One of Constellation's very best., 20 Aug 2005
Multi instrumentalist Sandro Perri, a.k.a. Polmo Polpo, creates slow burn drones and repeating motifs as a foundation for beautifully melodic slide guitar, subtle electronics and strings (amongst other instruments). What really struck me about this album is the way the songs are so brilliantly structured, the songs (particularly 2 and 4) build up from very simple beginnings with layer upon layer of drones, motifs and subdued percusion to create a foundation for the interplay of the melodic lines of slide guitar and other instruments. This is definitely not background music, despite the laid back feel of the songs - there is so much to hear in each song that I find it hard to pull myself away from listening to this album. Although the first track starts like a typical Constellation release, buzzing of out of tune radios, this album offers something totally different from most of the cds that I have heard from Constellation. These are not apocalyptic, doom-and-gloom anthems - Constellation describes Polmo Polpo as 'pop-pastoral' - these are songs that rely on beauty and intricate melodic interplay rather than the power of a noise-climax and are very upbeat and positive compared to most songs to be heard on the label. To sum up, I would strongly recommend this album to anyone who is a fan of Constellation or music in general. Beautiful, intricate instrumentals that pull you in and wont let go until the last note has been played.

Beauty, 1 Feb 2006
This record is beautiful. I don't want to talk about the "Who needs verses and choruses, this is post-rock!!!" crap. Just texturally, it's sublime. He uses the most perfect shards of guitar experimentalism and instrumental exploration to piece together these masterpieces of minimalistic perfection. The tracks swell (as the cover states) like organisms, looping over and over like snowballs, forever collecting more and more particles and pieces of sonaristic bliss until the climax just washes over you like a tidal wave.If you like textural post-rock in the vein of Mogwai, GY!BE, you will adore this album and not want to tell anyone about it, because it's so unharmed and perfect.

very different, 16 Dec 2003
Firstly, this is a CD which will definitely (and unfortunately) not be to everybody's taste. However, the fact that you have stumbled across it might make it appropriate for you. It's certainly very unique, and also very interesting. I have not yet received Polmo Polpo's previous release, 'The Science Of Breath', so I cannot make comparisons to it, however 'Like Hearts Swelling' certainly has a surprisingly positive 'vibe' to it (most noticeable on tracks 2 and 4). As with most Constellation releases, this is definitely not 'background' music... it's more, music to get taken away by while listening through good headphones. Definitely not 'mind-blowing', more, intriguing as to where the music is going to go next. Very creative. I have given 4 stars opposed to 5 because of it's price in relation to the quantity (a quarter short of an hour). It deserves 5 out of 5 for quality, however!
