Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Managing--sort of--to keep within the Pet Shop Boys tradition of one-word album titles, the moniker of this latest best-of, PopArt, is typical of the band--arrogant and somewhat pretentious yet also tongue-in-cheek and slyly self-aware. All the 35 tracks on these two CDs are indeed both pop and art and rather than being in chronological order have been split in fairly arbitrary fashion across a "Pop" and, erm, an "Art" disc. The band are doubtless well aware that much heated discussion will take place among fans about which track belongs where, and indeed, as evidenced on the commentary of the accompanying DVD, squabbled about the splits themselves when compiling this release.

Philosophical debates aside, this is an absolutely essential collection for anyone who enjoys the Pet Shop Boys' unique mix of bittersweet poignancy, archness and occasional high camp--or indeed for any discerning pop (or art) fan. Encompassing almost all their single releases (only "Was It Worth It?" and "How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously?" are missing), this is a glorious retrospective of one of Britain's finest pop institutions. Let's hope there are another 35 singles half this good for a quadruple box set in another 18 years' time. --Rikki Price

5.0 out of 5 stars Pop art, 19 Sep 2003
By A Customer
How many bands in the world would have trouble fitting all their UK Top 20 hits on two compact discs? A handful. Pet Shop Boys is one of the very few. In fact, counting the singles of theirs, that haven’t reached UK Top 20 can be done on only one finger.

This double-cd feature, contains 33 songs that did reach UK Top 20 plus two new songs, one of which is the new single Miracles, released in early november, that most likely will be their 34th hit. The songs are not presented in chronological order, but divided into Pop and Art. The difference is not obvious.

With Pet Shop Boys’ back-catalouge, how can you go wrong? You can’t of course. This is easily the best Greatest Hits compilation released in a very long time. Buy it for your self, and give everyone you know a copy for Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars The essential purchase of your life, 22 Nov 2003
By Monroe Stahr (Hollywood) - See all my reviews
Someday somebody might might make an album as good as this. Perhaps.

The monster hits - West End Girls, It's A Sin, Always On My Mind et al - stand alongside the self-referential techno-pop of Yesterday When I Was Mad or the string tinged tragedy of I Don't Know What You Want But I Can't Give It Anymore as proof that sales do not equate with quality, especially in pop music - the most commercially driven of art forms.

The two new songs Miracles and Flamboyant show that Pet Shop Boys are as good as they ever were, it's just the pop landscape which has shifted.

One brilliant single may be considered fortunate.
Thirty odd looks like genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant and timely collection...., 12 Jul 2005
By John David Charles Hilton "Creative spark...." (Redcliffe, Bristol United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This collection updates the earlier Discography and takes the story up to then end of 2003... And what a story it has been. Pet Shop Boys have been the most consistantly brilliant and intelligent pop groups of the last twenty years. There were many other pop groups during that period, but none can match PSB for wit, depth or melodic genius. This collection contains almost all of their singles. The obvious omissions are "How Can You Expect to be Taken Seriously" (a pity as it's very different to the album version - and there is room on the CDs for at least two more tracks), Was it Worth It? (likewise, it's not a classic but it was quite fun) and Absolutely Fabulous (no great loss, it's a novelty throwaway). It is difficult to pick out personal faves from this collection (so many great tracks) but for me You Only Tell Me..., It's a Sin, Being Boring, Red Letter Day, Liberation and I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind of Thing are obvious stand outs... Signs are the PSB are past their peak now (that occurred with the brilliant Very album) but that doesn't affect this collection...
If you don't have the albums then this is a great value purchase that you will not regret.
If you do own the albums (as I do) then it is nice to have all of the hits in one place...
